LOS ANGELES — Joel Thys had four hits, including a home run for the Sonoma State baseball team in Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State Los Angeles, but it would not be enough offense for the Seawolves, as they would be swept by the Golden Eagles in the opening doubleheader of the four-game series. SSU suffers its sixth loss in a row, dropping to 18-16 this season and 16-10 in the CCAA. CSULA improves to 17-15 on the season and 13-13 in conference play.
Game 1: Cal State L.A. 8, Sonoma State 5
Garrett Schwartz and Thys both had home runs in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, but Cal State L.A. provided more offense as they Sonoma State an 8-5 loss.
Seawolves' ace pitcher
Thomas Lee (5-2) got the start in game one and pitched for six innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits. His counterpart, Ryan Santhon (3-0), got the start on the mound for the Golden Eagles, throwing six innings giving up three runs, one of them earned, on two hits, striking out 11 Sonoma State batters.
CSULA got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI groundout by Brian Compton, scoring Nick Rodarte for the first run of the game. The Golden Eagles tacked on two more runs in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Jeremy Weber to put the score at 3-0. Cal State L.A. extended its lead to five at 5-0 in the third inning on RBI singles from Cliff Quick and James Wharton.
The Seawolves finally broke through for two runs in the fifth innings on an error by second baseman, Joe Park, allowing Jeff Boulware and Thys to score to make the score 5-2. Schwartz would then homer in the sixth for Sonoma State, but it was answered by Cal State L.A. in the bottom half of the sixth when Manny Acosta scored on a fielder's choice RBI from Scott Masik to give the hosts a 6-3 lead after six complete innings.
Both starters were relieved in the seventh inning.
Joey Van Cleave came in for Lee, while Jacob Valenzuela replaced Santhon. Van Cleave came in and gave up a two-run home run to Acosta in the bottom of the seventh, putting CSULA back up by five runs, 8-3.
Down by five heading into the top of the ninth, Sonoma State would score two runs, including a solo home run by Thys. After a passed ball that walked
Steven Filippi and allowed
Justin Serrao to score,
Devon Zenn would serve as the game-tying run, but he grounded into a game-ending double play.
Offensively for the Seawolves, Thys led the way with two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Schwartz, Boulware and Serrao plated the other three runs for the Seawolves. Quick and Acosta had two hits in the win for the Golden Eagles. Acosta also contributed two RBI's.
Game 2: Cal State L.A. 9, Sonoma State 8
The Sonoma State bats came alive in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring eight runs in the game, seven of which came across the plate in the first inning. However, Cal State L.A. had a seven-run inning of its own to eventually outscore the Seawolves 9-8, handing Sonoma State its sixth loss in a row.
Ian Ocon made his second start of the season for the Seawolves, and pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. Rodarte started for the Golden Eagles, but lasted just two-thirds of an inning and was relieved by David Arredondo (3-3) after giving up five runs in the first inning. Arredondo pitched well, through eight innings on the mound; he gave up three runs on nine hits and was credited with the win.
SSU got off to fast start, scoring seven runs in the first inning. Schwartz started things off with a bases loaded two-RBI double that scored
Jackson Stogner and
Evan Warner. After
Scott Templeton and Boulware struck out,
Kevin Cramer ripped a bases-clearing, three-RBI double down the right field line to give the Seawolves a 5-0 lead. In his second at-bat of the inning, Stogner hit a two-RBI single up the middle to increase the Sonoma State lead to 7-0.
Cal State L.A. put its first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Wharton. In the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Eagles would begin their monumental comeback. Andrew Allen scored the first run of the inning on a balk by Ocon. Weber followed with an RBI single and would eventually come around to score when Park put a ball in play and reached on an error by Sonoma State shortstop, Serrao. Quick singled in a run, and an error by Sonoma State center fielder, Warner, allowed Wharton to score on the play, cutting the CSULA deficit to one at 7-6.
Michael Garber (2-2) came in to pitch for Ocon with a runner on third and two outs. Garber would allow two more runs to score, before Samuel Arce grounded out to end the inning. The damage had already been done, however, as the Golden Eagles took the lead 8-7. Garber pitched the remainder of the game for the Seawolves, giving up two runs on four hits; he was tagged with the loss.
Cal State L.A. put across an insurance run in the sixth, making the score 9-7. The Seawolves would threaten in the ninth, but could only plate one run, taking the loss 9-8.
Cramer led the Seawolves offense with three RBI's, while Stogner and Schwartz each had two. Filippi went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. For the Golden Eagles, seven different players had one RBI, and eight different players scored a run in the victory.
Sonoma State and Cal State L.A. will wrap the four-game series Sunday, with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
