Game 2: Cal State L.A. 9, Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score
LOS ANGELES -- Looking to end its six-game skid, the Sonoma State baseball team would ride the arm of starting pitcher
Joshua Nervis in game one, but the offense couldn't overcome three first-inning runs scored by Cal State L.A. in a 3-2 loss to open up play on Sunday. The Seawolves (18-18, 16-12 CCAA) then surrendered nine runs in the nightcap en route to a 9-1 loss at the hands of the Golden Eagles; it was SSU's eighth straight defeat. CSULA rises to 19-15 and 15-13 in conference play.
Game 1: Cal State L.A. 3, Sonoma State 2
After giving up three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Nervis settled down and allowed no runs and only four more hits through his final seven innings of work. However, the Sonoma State offense was held at check by four different Cal State L.A. pitchers.
Even though the Golden Eagles scored three in their first at bat, it was the Seawolves to draw first blood and with two outs.
Devon Zenn drew a walk, then advanced to second base on a wild pitch.
Garrett Schwartz would then get on base via a CSULA error, which allowed Zenn to score from second.
After Cal State L.A.'s three runs in the bottom of the first, the contest would turn into a battle on the mound between Nervis and his counterpart, Justin Harr. Sonoma State got a run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Zenn, scoring Stogner, but Harr wouldn't allow another run in the frame. The Golden Eagles elected to go to their bullpen the rest of the way, bringing in three different pitchers at the start of the next three innings, but all three shut down the Seawolves to hold on to the 3-2 win.
Zenn and
Steven Filippi had a pair of hits to pace Sonoma State; Schwartz and
Jeff Johnson accounted for the other two hits by the visitors in the opener. Nervis (2-3) went the distance for SSU, scattering six hits, allowing three runs (all in the first inning) and six walks, but struckout four.
Harr (3-1) earned the victory on the mound for Cal State L.A., allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks in his six innings of work. Daniel Duran had three of the six hits for the Golden Eagles, also scoring a run.
Game 2: Cal State L.A. 9, Sonoma State 1
After holding the Golden Eagles to one hit through the first two innings, the Seawolves began to fall apart. CSULA would take the early 1-0 lead in the third, then scored three in the fourth to chase starter
Taylor Herbert (2-5) from the game. Replacing Herbert wouldn't stop the bleeding, however, as Sonoma State gave up two more runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to trail by nine at 9-0.
Sonoma State wouldn't cut into the nine-run deficit until the top of the seventh inning. Cal State L.A. would record two quick outs before
Scott Templeton walked then scored on an RBI single by Stogner. That would be it, however, as Sergio Luna replaced starter Gabriel Asakura (4-3) to get the final out of the game. Asakura gave up just four hits and four walks to Seawolf batters, while striking out seven.
Stogner had two of the four hits for Sonoma State in the series finale, batting home the lone run in the seventh.
Sonoma State will look to snap its eight-game losing streak when the team returns home to face Chico State on Friday at Seawolf Diamond. First pitch between the Seawolves and Wildcats is set for 3:00 p.m.
After a single game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday, the series will then conclude on Sunday at Raley Field in Sacramento, the home of the Sacramento RiverCats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland A's.
