ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --
Skylynn Myers smacked her 36th career double, becoming the program's all-time leader in that category, and
Samantha Lipperd struckout 17 batters to break the school's single-season strikeout record, a mark that she set herself last season, as the Sonoma State softball team completed the four-game series sweep of visiting Cal State Stanislaus with 2-1 and 4-0 victories on Senior Day in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves rise to 31-17 this season with a 17-15 mark in the CCAA. The Warriors fall to 15-38 and 6-24 in the conference.
Game 1: Sonoma State 2, Cal State Stanislaus 1
Yet another pitcher's duel between Sonoma State's
Samantha Lipperd and Cal State Stanislaus' Brittany Weatherford in the opener, as the two combined to allow just six hits in the ballgame, and just three combined hits in the first six innings.
It would be the Seawolves, however, to score the first run of the day in the fourth inning. Weatherford retired the entire SSU lineup in order the first time through before
Ancia Purdy became Sonoma State's first base runner in her second plate appearance. She led off with a walk, setting up a sacrifice bunt situation for
Vanessa Currie. Currie laid down the bunt and was thrown out at first, but as Purdy closed in on second base, she noticed that third base wasn't being covered. As she rounded second, Cal State Stanislaus' Sarah Locarnini, who recorded the putout on Currie, made a throw towards third base where left fielder Brieanna Stone came charging in to cover, but the throw from Sarah Locarnini went wide and the error allowed Purdy to scamper home.
With a narrow one-run lead heading into the seventh, Lipperd ran into a bit of trouble, allowing a single and a pair of walks to load the bases with two outs. Then, she would walk another batter with the bases loaded to force home the tying run. Lipperd bounced back to strikeout Rachel Borges, ending the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Shannon Kehr drew a one-out walk, then advanced to second on a single by Myers. Kehr eventually stole third base before pinch-hitter
Keisi Chinen scored Kehr from third on a bloop single that fell in and out of the glove of a diving Locarnini, right in front of the right fielder Stone. The run would give Sonoma State the thrilling walkoff 2-1 victory.
Lipperd allowed just two hits and three walks, striking out 12 batters. The lone run came in on the bases-loaded walk in the seventh. The 12 strikeouts helped break her own school record for most K's in a single-season (324) that she set in 2011. Myers went 2 for 3 in the opener to pace the offense.
Warrior pitcher Kiley Mendez (2-3) came on in relief of Weatherford in the sixth and gave up the game-winning bloop single to Chinen in the seventh.
Game 2: Sonoma State 4, Cal State Stanislaus 0
After behind held to 13 hits in the first three games of the series, Sonoma State found its offensive rhythm in the finale, pounding out 11 hits, the most since SSU's 5-0 win over Chico State for the Tournament of Champions' platinum bracket title on Apr. 1. The Seawolves got it started early with four hits in the bottom of the first, but only one run would cross the plate, thanks to an RBI single by
Hayley Condon to score Purdy. Cal State Stanislaus starter Natalie Rendon pitched herself out of the inning to allow just one run, despite the bases being loaded with two outs.
Another Seawolf run would cross the plate in the fourth when
Danielle D'Eccliss put down a sacrifice bunt with
Megan Konieczka on second base. The Warriors would decide to try and get the lead runner in Konieczka out at third, but the throw would sail wide and Konieczka would come home for SSU's second run of the game.
In the Sonoma State fifth, Myers delivered her record-breaking double, a shot to right center field, drawing a standing ovation from the Sonoma State fans in attendance. However, she would be left stranded at second. In the bottom of the sixth, Purdy and Currie came up with RBI singles to score Konieczka and Purdy, respectively, as the Seawolves took a 4-0 lead into the seventh. That's where Lipperd (26-10) shut the door, retiring the Warriors in order to earn her 26th win of the season. She allowed just four hits, no runs and no walks, while fanning five. In total, Lipperd struckout 17 Cal State Stanislaus batters on the day, bringing her season total to 332 (and 798 for her career).
Purdy went 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, Konieczka followed with a 2 for 3 effort, scoring a pair of runs, and
Ali Palermo came up with a pair of hits as well.
Sonoma State will wrap up the regular season next Friday and Saturday in San Francisco, when they travel across the Golden Gate Bridge to face San Francisco State. The Seawolves have been all but mathematically eliminated from qualifying for the CCAA Softball Championship Tournament, but are still very much alive in terms of making their fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance.
