BOX SCORE Chico State 5, Sonoma State 3 (14 innings)  --  Box Score

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. —
Devon Zenn and Garrett Schwartz accounted for six of the 13 hits and Joel Thys recorded two RBI's for the Sonoma State baseball team in the opening game against heated CCAA rival, Chico State.  Despite three early runs in the and solid pitching throughout, the Seawolves would go on to lose their ninth-straight game, 5-3, in 14 innings.  The Seawolves drop to 18-19 on the season and 16-13 in the CCAA.  The Wildcats improve to 27-12 for the season and 17-12 in conference play.

Ian Ocon tossed five innings, giving up three runs on five hits, in his second straight start for SSU.  For Chico State, Kagen Hopkins got the starting nod and pitched eight innings of work, surrendering three runs on ten hits.

Back from an eight-game road trip, the Seawolves looked to put runs on the board to break their losing skid.  Schwartz got things started for Sonoma State in the bottom of the first on an RBI single that scored Steven Filippi.  Thys would then double in two runs to put SSU up 3-0 after one inning.

Chico State began chipping away at their three-run deficit in the top of the second when Eric Angerer hit a deep shot to left center field, to put the score at 3-1.  The Wildcats tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, starting when Ocon walked Angerer to lead off the inning.  Ian McKay then singled to right field, moving Angerer to second.  Cody Foster singled in both Angerer and McKay to tie the game at 3-3.

Dominant pitching by both bullpens held the game scoreless into extra innings.  After eight innings of scoreless baseball, Chico State would capitalize on defensive errors by Sonoma State in the top of the 14th inning.  Angerer singled into left field to start the inning, and would advance to third, two groundouts later.  T.J. Yasuahra then lined a pitch to second base, but Jackson Stonger was unable to handle the short hop, allowing Angerer to score the go-ahead run, putting the Wildcats on top, 4-3.  Pierson Jeremiah then doubled, moving Yasuhara to third and eventually home on a throwing error by SSU right fielder Schwartz, giving the Wildcats a 5-3 lead.

After Thys grounded out to lead off the bottom of the 14th for the Seawolves, Evan Warner drew a walk.  With the tying run at the plate, Danny Dworkin and Jeff Boulware struck out swinging to end the extra-inning game.

Michael Garber (2-3), who came into pitch in the 12th inning, tossed three innings, allowed the winning run to cross the plate.  Wildcats reliever Morgan Yee (1-0) received his first win of the season after pitching five shutout innings, while striking out eight batters.  Mike Botelho notched his seventh save of the year, pitching the bottom of the 14th inning, striking out two batters.

Offensively for the Seawolves, Filippi and Kevin Cramer contributed two hits each, in addition to Schwartz's and Zenn's three hits.  Filippi scored a run as well.  Yasuhara had a three-hit day for the Wildcats, scoring a run as well.  Foster had a two hit, two RBI day at the plate, while Angerer scored three runs for the Wildcats in the victory.

After a long game Friday, Sonoma State and Chico State will have a quick turnaround, as they will play games two and three of the four-game series on Saturday in a doubleheader at Seawolf Diamond.  First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
