SSU led throughout the game in game two, until Chico State scored two runs in the top half of the seventh to take the lead and get the win, 3-2. Game 1: Sonoma State 7, Chico State 1
Sonoma State broke out of its nine-game funk in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, scoring seven runs behind the strong pitching of Nervis. Nervis (3-3) pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on nine hits, striking out four and not allowing any walks. Austin Alva (2-1) started for the Wildcats, but lasted just 3 and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on four hits.
Chico State scored its only run in the top of the second on an RBI double by Ian McKay, which scored Eric Anderson. From then on it was all Seawolves, scoring in four consecutive innings. SSU got started in the bottom of the third inning when
Joel Thys knocked a two-RBI double to left field with two outs, giving the Seawolves a 2-1 lead.
Sonoma State scored two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to increase its lead to five runs, at 6-1.
Garrett Schwartz hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 7-1. With a six-run cushion,
Taylor Herbert came in on relief for Nervis. Herbert finished the game for the Seawolves, pitching two scoreless innings, not allowing any hits and striking out one batter.
Offensively for the Seawolves,
Jackson Stogner and
Justin Serrao both had two-hit days at the plate. Stogner also contributed two RBI's, along with
Evan Warner's two pinch-hit RBI's. Four different players had two hits for the Wildcats in the loss.
Game 2: Chico State 3, Sonoma State 2
It was a 2-1 ball game for most of the afternoon, but defensive errors plagued the Seawolves allowing two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning, letting the doubleheader sweep slip away, 3-2.
Harmen Sidhu (4-1) made his tenth start of the season, tossing sixth and one-third innings, allowing three runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits, striking out eight Chico State batters. Sidhu received the tough loss, leaving the game with two runners on base, which would eventually score. Sean Martin started for the Wildcats, throwing 5.1 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits. Jeremy Perez (1-1) relieved Martin and got the win while only pitching two-thirds of an inning. Mike Botelho came in in the bottom of the seventh and tallied his eighth save and the second in as many days.
Sonoma State got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning when Jeff Boulware hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring
Devon Zenn from third, to put the Seawolves up early, 1-0. Chico State put up a run in the top of the third on an RBI single up the middle by Blake Gibbs to tie the game at 1-1. SSU answered quickly scoring a run in the bottom half of the third on a wild pitch that allowed Thys to score from third base.
Both teams were held silent until the top of the seventh inning when Chico State put two runs across to take the lead, 3-2. The Wildcats scored on a groundout to second by Cody Foster that scored Cody Webber. Gibbs would then single to right center and score Pierson Jeremiah. In the bottom of the seventh, Thys singled through the right side to put the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate. However, Schwartz would fly out to center field to end the game and the Seawolves came up short in the 3-2 loss.
SSU scattered five hits in the seven-inning game, Serrao had two of the five hits. Thys and Zenn scored one run each and Boulware contributed an RBI. Foster and Gibbs each had two hits in the win for the Wildcats. Gibbs also had two RBI's.
