SAN FRANCISCO
-- The Sonoma State softball team exploded for 20 runs on Saturday, wrapping up the 2012 regular season schedule with a pair of 10-0 victories over host San Francisco State at the SFSU Softball Field in San Francisco.  Keisi Chinen blasted a home run in each game, Shannon Kehr went 5 for 6 with three RBI's and Samantha Lipperd struckout 15 batters en route to the doubleheader sweep.

The Seawolves (35-17, 21-15 CCAA) finish the 2012 regular season on an eight-game win streak and will now await word on their NCAA postseason appearance.  The Gators see their season come to a close with a 17-35 overall record and 9-27 in conference play.

It was released on Wednesday that Sonoma State, despite last weekend's sweep of Cal State Stanislaus, fell to No. 7 in the official NCAA west region rankings.  The Seawolves will have at least a week off from competition, due to not qualifying for next weekend's CCAA tournament in Stockton, and will find out their NCAA playoff fate via a live selection show at NCAA.com on Monday, Apr. 30 at 7:00 a.m.  SSU will need to be one of the top eight teams in the region to play in its fourth consecutive NCAA tournament.

Game 1:  Sonoma State 10, San Francisco State 0

Samantha Lipperd went about normal business, tossing a one-hit shutout and striking out nine batters in her seven innings of work.  She retired the first 12 batters she saw before hitting the leadoff batter in the fifth inning.  Lipperd allowed just three base runners and the only hit for San Francisco State came at the top of the sixth inning.

Meanwhile, the offense came alive early and come through often, including two runs in the first and five runs in the seventh.  Purdy got the party almost immediately, doubling down the left field line just two pitches into the game, then advanced to third on a groundout by Vanessa Currie.  After Hayley Condon got hit by the pitch, Ali Palermo delivered a single up the middle, scoring Purdy.  Condon and Palermo moved to third and second base, respectively, on the play, before Shannon Kehr poked a single through the left side of the infield to score Condon, putting Sonoma State up 2-0 early.

Another run would cross the plate in the fourth inning by way of an RBI groundout by Megan Konieczka to give the Seawolves and Lipperd and three-run advantage.  In the sixth, SSU would tack on two more runs on a Keisi Chinen two-run home run to center field to give Sonoma State a comfortable 5-0 lead.

The flood gates reopened for the Seawolf offense in the seventh, bringing five runs across the plate for the eventual 10-0 win.  Purdy again led off the inning with a double, then scored on a bases-loaded RBi single by Condon.  Palermo then drew a walk, forcing home another run before Kehr brought in two runs on a double down the left field line for a 9-0 lead.  The 10th and final run came across on a sacrifice fly by Danielle D'Eccliss.

In total, Kehr led the attack with a 3 for 4 performance, recording three RBI's and one run scored.  Chinen's sixth-inning blast was part of a 2 for 3 game for the freshman, along with another 2 for 3 effort from Palermo, who had two RBI's and two runs scored.

Marisa Ibarra (7-12) lasted just two-thirds of the first inning, giving way to Ali Garcia after allowing two runs on two hits after only 21 pitches.  Garcia allowed the last 11 of Sonoma State's 13 hits in the ballgame, as eight runs crossed the plate in front of her.  San Francisco State's only hit came off the bat of Kelly Mast.

Game 2:  Sonoma State 10, San Francisco State 0  (5 innings)

The offensive momentum would continue for Sonoma State in the regular season finale, plating another 10 runs in the ballgame, but in the first five innings.  It would induce the eight-run mercy rule as Lipperd and the Seawolves earned another 10-0 shutout victory.  Lipperd rises to 30-10 this season; she allowed eight hits, no runs and struckout another six batters, increasing her record-breaking total to 375 this season.

Lipperd has now worked 33.1 consecutive innings without giving up a run of any kind.

Kehr would have another productive game, going a perfect 2 for 2 with two runs scored, Konieczka also went 2 for 2 with three runs scored, Chinen blasted another home run and the duo of Currie and D'Eccliss both had a pair of hits with an RBI in the victory.  SSU would rack up 14 hits off of SF State starting pitcher Becky Nakano (6-10), who went the distance for the Gators.

Sonoma State will have at least a week off before they find out if it will make its fourth straight NCAA tournament appearance.  The NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament field will be selected via a live broadcast at NCAA.com on Monday, Apr. 30 at 7:00 a.m.
