LA JOLLA, Calif. — Garrett Schwartz went 2 for 4 with four RBI's in game one and
Jackson Stogner scored the only run in game two for the Sonoma State baseball team, but the relentless offensive power by host UC San Diego enabled a Triton doubleheader sweep over the Seawolves on Friday in La Jolla. The two losses drop SSU to 18-13 for the season and 16-7 in the CCAA, but the Seawolves still hold onto first place. UCSD improves its record to 20-15 this season, with an 18-9 mark in conference play.
Game 1: UC San Diego 10, Sonoma State 8 -- Box Score
The Sonoma State bats came out hot, starting off the game with an early lead, but defensive errors and timely runs allowed UC San Diego to comeback and give the Seawolves their second loss in as many days in game one of the doubleheader, 10-8.
Joshua Nervis got the start for the Seawolves, making a brief outing, which lasted only four and two-thirds innings. Nervis allowed seven runs on 10 hits, while striking out three batters. Jeff Rauh started for the Tritons and lasted a mere four innings, surrendering six runs, two of them earned, on seven hits.
Sonoma State got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the top of the first.
Jackson Stogner led off the game by reaching on a fielding error by Triton third baseman Ryan O'Malley.
Danny Dworkin would then single up the middle, advancing Stogner to third.
Steven Filippi hit a sacrifice fly to score Stogner, plating the first run of the game. With bases loaded and two outs, Schwartz hit a three-RBI double down the left field line to clear the bases and give the Seawolves a 4-0 lead.
UC San Diego would counter with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-1 after one inning of play. Both teams traded runs in the third and Sonoma State put one across in the fourth. Down 6-2, UC San Diego had their big inning in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs. James Mossholder, who reached on a fielder's choice, came around to score on Scott Liske's RBI double for the Triton's first run of the inning to cut the SSU lead to 6-3. Nervis went on to hit Scott Frazier with a pitch. Danny Susdorf hit Frazier in on a two-RBI single. Susdorf advanced to second on the play, thanks to a throwing error by the left fielder Dworkin, stole third, and then came in to score on a throwing error by
Joel Thys, knotting the score at 6-6.
Justin Burns came on in the fifth inning to relieve Rauh, pitching a three-up, three-down inning. Burns pitched two innings, allowing one run on one hit. The Tritons took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, but Sonoma State quickly tied it at 7-7 in the top of the sixth inning.
Ian Ocon replaced Nervis on the mound with two outs in the fifth and quickly got the third out, picking off Mossholder at first. Ocon (0-3) pitched two and a third innings, giving up two earned runs on one hit; he was tagged with the loss.
With the scored tied at seven apiece, UC San Diego tacked on one in the seventh and two in the eighth to go up by three runs, 10-7. Sonoma State would threaten in the top of the ninth, scoring one, but it wasn't enough as the Seawolves suffered the loss, 10-8.
Offensively for the Seawolves, Schwartz led the way with a 2 for 4, four RBI day at the plate. Dworkin had two hits and scored two runs, Filippi knocked in two RBI's, and
Garrett Gooselaw had an RBI, along with two runs scored. Garrett Tuck led the Tritons' offense to the win, going 3 for 3 with a run and two RBI's. Three other UCSD players had a pair of RBI's as well.
Game 2: UC San Diego 4, Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score
The nightcap saw Sonoma State score one run on six hits, falling 4-1 for its third straight loss to UC San Diego in two days.
Taylor Herbert got the start for the Seawolves, pitching well into the fourth, until the Tritons put up four runs, three of which were earned. Herbert also gave up nine hits in his four innings of work. For UCSD, Trevor Scott would take the mound, pitching five solid innings and only allowing two hits, fanning 10 SSU batters.
It was a pitcher's duel for the first three innings until Sam Michaels got things started for UCSD in the fourth with a fielder's choice RBI that scored Brett Levy and Justin Rahn. Scott Liske then singled through the left side, advancing Michaels to third. Michaels then scored on a wild pitch by Herbert for the third run of the inning; Liske would advance to second on the play. Things would get worse for Sonoma State as a throwing error by catcher
Kyle Cerrudo allowed Liske to go to third before he would later score on a single by Spencer Frazier, putting the Tritons ahead 4-0.
Both teams would be held silent into the seventh and that's when Sonoma State would put its first run across the plate on a wild pitch by UCSD reliever Elias Tuma, scoring Stogner from third. The threat of a comeback would be nulled as Gooselaw struck out to end the game.
The Seawolves offense was quiet for most of the night, as UC San Diego's pitching held them to six hits. Gooselaw had two hits, Stogner had one and scored the lone run for SSU. For the Tritons, Danny Susdorf went 2 for 3 and Levy had a hit and scored a run. Michaels and Frazier knocked in one RBI each in the victory.
Sonoma State and UC San Diego will wrap up the four-game series with a single game on Saturday morning; first pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. at Triton Ballpark.
