ROHNERT PARK, Calif.— Sonoma State senior Thomas Lee threw a two-hit, complete game shutout in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, en route to a 4-0 victory against Cal State Monterey Bay.  In the nightcap, the Seawolves took advantage of seven defensive errors by the Otters (five in the fourth inning alone) to win 8-3, clinching the fourth and final spot in next week's CCAA Baseball Championship Tournament in La Jolla.

Sonoma State improved to 25-22 overall and 23-16 in the CCAA, securing the No. 4 seed in conference tournament, which will be hosted at Triton Ballpark by top-seeded UC San Diego.  It will be the second straight appearance in the CCAA tournament for the Seawolves (and the fifth appearance in the last six years).  The championship event starts on Thursday (May 10) and lasts through Saturday (May 12).  Cal State Monterey Bay drops to 25-24 this season, with an 18-21 in conference action.

UC San Diego has already clinched at least a share of the CCAA's regular season title and will be the No. 1 seed.  Chico State, which will be the No. 2 seed, can earn a share of the regular season title with a win on Sunday, while Cal State San Bernardino will play in next weekend's tournament as the No. 3 seed.  Official seedings and game times will be announced by the conference office Sunday evening.

Game 1:  Sonoma State 4, Cal State Monterey Bay 0

After striking out eight batters in Saturday's opener, Lee (7-2) continued to etch his name deeper into the Sonoma State record book, compiling 209 career strikeouts.  Lee dominated on the mound, retiring the last 14 batters to end the game.  Jordan Helmkamp started for the Otters and pitched for six and one-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits, eventually taking the loss, dropping his record to 4-2.

Sonoma State got on the board in the second inning with the first run coming across the plate by way of a passed ball that let Joel Thys score from third base.  Jeff Boulware then singled in Garrett Gooselaw from second base to put the Seawolves on top 2-0 in the early going.

Neither team would score again until the seventh when Gooselaw knocked in the third SSU run on a single to center field, scoring Garrett Schwartz.  Sonoma State would increase their lead to four runs in the eighth inning on a Steven Filippi RBI double, knocking in Jackson Stogner.  The score would remain 4-0 as Lee finished things up with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning.

Offensively for Sonoma State, Filippi, Gooselaw and Boulware all had one RBI in the victory, while Thys had a two-hit day at the plate, also scoring a run.  Jason Merjano and Gino Valletta were the only CSUMB players with a hit.

Game 2:  Sonoma State 8, Cal State Monterey Bay 3

Sonoma State scattered six hits, but plated eight runs, due to seven defensive errors by the Otters in the evening game at Seawolf Diamond.  SSU was able to sweep the doubleheader, clinch the series win, and earn a trip to the conference tournament, all in one game, with an 8-3 victory.

Harmen Sidhu (6-1) continued his impressive season as a starting pitcher with the Seawolves, throwing six innings, giving up two runs on five hits, receiving his sixth win of the year in his final regular season outing.  CSUMB starter, Jeff Owen (4-4), got the tough-luck loss in the nightcap, tossing three and two-thirds innings, allowed eight runs, none of which were earned.

Cal State Monterey Bay knocked in two runs in the top of the second inning on an infield single that scored Jesse Olson from third.  Jared DeCastro sprinted in to score behind Olson on the soft ground ball out to Justin Serrao at short stop.  However, Sonoma State came back to tie it at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning on a two-RBI double by Evan Warner

Locked in a 2-2 tie, the Seawolves looked to pull ahead in the bottom of the fourth.  Garrett Schwartz reached on the first of five errors in the inning by the Otters.  Schwartz eventually came around to score, along with Johnson on a two-RBI single up the middle by Serrao.  The scoring wouldn't stop there, as Jackson Stogner and Filippi each contributed two-RBI knocks to give the Seawolves an 8-2 lead.

Down by six going into the top of the seventh inning, CSU Monterey Bay put a run on a board off of an RBI single by Tommy George, to score Nolan Murray.  One run would not be enough for the Otters, though, as the Seawolves completed the doubleheader sweep.

Stogner, Warner, Filippi, and Serrao supplied the offense for SSU, each driving in two runs.  Stogner and Serrao came across to score twice as well.  Ty Morris led the Otter's offense with two RBI's, while George contributed one RBI.

Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay will wrap up the four-game series (and the regular season) Sunday, with a single game set to start at 11:00 a.m.
