ROHNERT PARK
-- The Sonoma State men's soccer team scored early, and they scored often, rolling to a convincing 5-1 victory over visiting Santa Rosa Junior College in the 2012 exhibition opener on Sunday at the Seawolf Soccer Field.  Five different Seawolves scored in the match, including Taylor Varnadore, Michel Arroyo, Brian Angel, Aaron Glover and Brenton Frame.  SSU will now play two scrimmages before kicking off the regular season schedule on Aug. 31 against Saint Martin's in Phoenix, Ariz.

Sonoma State didn't waste any time scoring a goal and it would be Varnadore, the team's leading scorer from a season ago, to give SSU the early 1-0 advantage just 6:07 into the contest.  Just over 20 minutes later, Arroyo connected on an unassisted goal to put the Seawolves up 2-0.  After another 20 minutes, it would be Angel to join the Seawolves' scoring parade off of assists by Chris Pihl and Varnadore, putting SSU up by three at the 48th minute.  Another Sonoma State ball would find the back of the net at the 66:30 mark when Glover converted a successful corner kick by Nico Spann, who served it into the box from the right side.
Santa Rosa JC would finally put a goal on the scoreboard late in the match to cut the Sonoma State lead to three at 4-1, but Frame would score the fifth and final goal for the Seawolves a couple of minutes later to give SSU the convincing 5-1 win on Sunday.

The Sonoma State offense was firing on all cylinders in Sunday's exhibition friendly, as the team outshot the Bear Cubs, 17-4.  Beau Diaz and Sean Taufer split time between the posts, but neither recorded a save.  Santa Rosa JC netminder Chris Kelly made one stop for the Bear Cubs on the opposite end of the pitch.

The Seawolves will travel down the 101 to San Rafael on Wednesday to play Dominican at 5:00 pm before wrapping up their preseason campaign on Aug. 26 when they host Academy of Art at the Seawolf Soccer Field -- both matches will be played as scrimmages.  After opening the regular season with two matches in Arizona on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2, Sonoma State will open up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 7.
