Early Goal Gives #20 Seawolves Season Sweep Of Chico State

BOX SCORE #20 Sonoma State 1, Chico State 0 -- Box Score

CHICO, Calif. --
Senior Elena Catania used her noggin to fire one into the back of the net, en route to the second straight Sonoma State women's soccer victory over rival Chico State, 1-0.  The win gives the Seawolves the season sweep over the Wildcats and improves their record to 9-1-0 and 6-1-0 in the CCAA.  Chico State drops to 4-6-0, 2-6-0 in CCAA play.

Playing each other for the second time in nine days, Sonoma State was familiar with the Wildcats and proved it on the field.  A mere 5:40 into the game, a ball off the foot of Carolyn Greco was courageously headed into the back of the goal by Catania for her third score of the season.

Catania attempted three shots for the game, while Cara Curtin, Margi Osmundson and Gretel Amman each attempted a shot, in the defensively played game.  For the Wildcats, Cassi Scroggins, Shelby Dunlap, Carly Singer and Courtlynn Cerrito all attempted to put one in the back of the net.  However, none would succeed as Sonoma State goalkeeper Alexis Sciacqua earned her fifth shutout of the season, collecting two saves.  Chico State's Brianna Furner also made two saves in the game.

Sonoma State will return to Seawolf Soccer Field for four games, beginning with UC San Diego next Friday (Oct. 5).  Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
