BOX SCORE Cal State L.A. 64, Sonoma State 56 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Jamie Capoot had career-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds, but the Sonoma State women's basketball team succumbed to Cal State L.A. team that hit several clutch shots down the strech to hold off a pesky Seawolf team for a 64-56 win on the hardwood of The Wolves' Den on Friday night in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves have dropped three straight games, falling to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in the CCAA.  The Golden Eagles improve to 10-4 (5-2 CCAA).
While the Seawolves got off to a fast start, jumping out to a pair of seven-point leads at 10-3 and 12-5 through the first nine minutes of the contest, but the Golden Eagles went on an 8-0 run over the next two minutes to regain a lead at 13-12, their first since scoring the first points of the game on a Lacey Gibbons three-pointer.  Free throws by Capoot and
Elizabeth Day put the hosts back up by two at 15-13, but CSULA followed with a pair of free shots from the line and another three-ball by Gibbons put the visitors up three at 18-15.  It was a start of a 13-2 run by the Golden Eagles to end the opening half with a 26-17 lead.
No Sonoma State player scored more than four points in the half, with four coming from Day, Capoot and
Bronte Sheahan.  After a 4 for 6 shooting effort in the opening five minutes of the night, SSU cooled to just 2 for 20 the rest of the period, allowing CSULA to take its nine-point lead at the intermission.  The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, connected on 36.0 percent of their shots, a 9 for 25 effort.
In the second half, Cal State L.A. remained in control, eventually extending their lead to a game-high 10-points (35-25) at the 15:31 mark.  However, Sonoma State began to make its move, kick starting a 16-3 run that put the hosts up three points at 41-38 with 10:54 left in regulation.  It would be shortlived as the Golden Eagles took the lead back, but not without constant resistance from a fiesty Seawolf team.  A layup by
Taylor Vigil and a free throw by Day put SSU down by three at 51-48 with 3:11 left, but CSULA would hit a couple of clutch shots down the stretch to hold on to the 64-56 victory.
Capoot was the only Seawolf in double-figures on Friday with her aforementioned 14 points.  Sheahan came off the bench to score nine points, followed by eight points each from Day and Vigil; Day also came down with a game-high 10 rebounds.  As a team, SSU connected on 35.8 percent of its shots (19-53), including 8 of 24 from three-point range.
Cal State L.A. got a game-high 16 points from Paige Melville, who came off the bench to see 27 minutes of play.  Tessondra Williams netted 14 and Kelli Lewis chipped in with 11 for the Golden Eagles, who made 38.5 percent of their shots on 20 of 52 from the floor (8 of 21 from beyond the arc).
Sonoma State, which has lost three straight games, will look to record its first victory in 2013 when it plays host to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday night.  Tip off from The Wolves' Den is again set for 5:30 p.m.
