GOLDEN EAGLES, TOROS RECAP: It was a rough weekend for the Seawolves, as they took back-to-back losses at the hands of Cal State L.A. (64-56) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (64-46). Sonoma State is currently on a four-game slide, their longest since the 2010-11 season.
Jamie Capoot was the only player in double-digit scoring against the Golden Eagles of CSULA, as she dropped in 14, going 6-of-8 from the free-throw line and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Although SSU went for 46 points against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday, freshman
Brianna Burgos had a coming out party, leading Sonoma State with a career-high 12 points, going 4-for-6 from the field and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
SCOUTING CAL POLY POMONA: Sitting alone in the third place seat with a 5-3 record in CCAA play (7-5 overall), the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona look to continue their four-game winning streak when they play host to Sonoma State on Thursday. The Broncos are averaging 63.2 points per game as a team, led by J.J. Judge's 16.8 points per game, which is the fifth-highest in the conference. Ashley Boggs helps Cal Poly Pomona along as well, averaging 11.3 points per contest. Boggs is also contributing 7.5 rebounds per game, which is fifth in the conference. Jennifer Bryant leads the team, as well as the conference, in three-point shooting percentage, draining 44 percent of her shots. Cal Poly Pomona holds a commanding 25-9 all-time series lead over Sonoma State, including victories in the previous seven meetings.
SCOUTING HUMBOLDT STATE: With a record of 7-7 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA, the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State are currently on a four-game losing streak and are looking to avoid their first five-game slide since the 2004-05 season. As a team, the 'Jacks are averaging 60.9 points per game, led by Lisa Petty, whose 18.1 points per game is good for third in the CCAA. Petty is also leading the team in rebounds per game with 8.7, which is also second in the conference. HSU center Elle Anderson leads the CCAA in field goal percentage, shooting 53.3 percent from the floor. While Sonoma State leads the all-time series at 33-30, Humboldt State has won the last three meetings. Sonoma State will be in Arcata on Saturday, after HSU battles San Francisco State on Thursday.
BACK TO THE FUTURE: The future of Sonoma State women's basketball was on full display Saturday night as freshman
Brianna Burgos made the most of her playing time, scoring a team-leading and career-high 12 points in 18 minutes. However, Burgos was not the only freshman to get playing time on Saturday. Sonoma State head coach
Mark Rigby played five out of six freshmen on his bench and all but one put in at least one basket during the game. The Sonoma State freshmen have accounted for 120 of the 720 total points scored by the Seawolves this year.
SEAWOLVES' NOTES: Taylor Vigil continues to lead Sonoma State in scoring, averaging 9.8 points per game. Vigil is also among the conference leaders in field goal percentage, shooting 50.5 percent from the field. Also of note, Cal Poly Pomona undefeated against the Seawolves in Pomona, as Sonoma State has yet to come away with a victory in Kellogg Gym in the 13 year history between the two teams. Sonoma State is an even .500 when playing in Arcata against Humboldt State, sporting a 14-14 record all-time. Sonoma State will try to avoid their first five-game losing streak since the 2008-09 season.
