Sonoma Battles With 'Jacks, But Comes Up Short On Saturday

Sophomore Travis Newman led the Seawolves in scoring for the second straight game.
BOX SCORE Humboldt State 66, Sonoma State 58 -- Box Score

ARCATA, Calif. --
Travis Newman scored a career-high 17 points and tied for the team-high with six rebounds, but despite holding a narrow one-point lead with five minutes left to play, the Sonoma State women's basketball team fell victim to a 12-3 run by Humboldt State in the final 4:37, losing 66-58 on Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata.  The Seawolves (4-10, 2-8 CCAA) have dropped six straight games and are winless thus far in January.  The Lumberjacks snapped their five-game losing streak on Saturday to improve to 8-8 overall and 4-6 in the CCAA.

Newman topped her previous career-high of 16, of which she netted in her collegiate debut against Colorado Mesa back on Nov. 19, 2011.  Elizabeth Day chipped in with 10 points, matching Newman and Jamie Capoot with six rebounds each; Capoot dropped in nine points as the three combined for 36 of SSU's 58 points in the contest.

The Seawolves was more efficient from the floor, connecting on 44.6 percent of their shots (25-56) while holding the Lumberjacks to 43.3 percent (26-60).  However, Sonoma couldn't contain Humboldt's Lisa Petty, who torched the nets for 31 points on 12 of 21 from the hardwood, including 5 of 8 from beyond the three-point arc -- Petty scored 24 of her 31 points in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

While HSU won by eight points, it wouldn't be indicative of how the flow of the game went.  Both teams battled through 10 ties and eight lead changes.  SSU held its largest lead of the night at 13-8 with 12:30 to play in the opening half, and until HSU pulled away at the end of the night, the hosts would never lead by more than five points, that being at the 13:34 mark of the second half when the 'Jacks led 40-35.

A jumper by Taylor Vigil put Sonoma State up 55-54 with 5:04 remaining in the ballgame, but Humboldt State regained the lead on the ensuing possession, thanks to a three-ball by Caitie Richards to go up by two at 57-55.  The Seawolves came up empty on their next two possessions, allowing the Lumberjacks to score five of the next six points by either squad.  A made free throw by Capoot at 2:59 cut the 'Jack lead to 59-56, but that would be as close as Sonoma would get the rest of the way.

The six-game skid by Sonoma State is the longest for the program since the end of the 2008-09 season.  With a 2-8 mark in the CCAA, the Seawolves sit in 11th place in the conference standings, one-game ahead of last-place Cal State Stanislaus (1-9).

Sonoma State returns home on Friday to host Cal State San Bernardino (6-7, 4-5 CCAA) at 5:30 p.m. in The Wolves' Den.
