ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State let a double-digit halftime lead get away on Friday night, but with a strong late second half surge, they earned a hard-fought 53-50 win over Cal State San Bernardino at The Wolves' Den.

Brianna Burgos paced the offense with 12 points apiece as the Seawolves snapped a six-game losing skid and earned their first win in 2013. Sonoma improves to 5-10, 3-8 CCAA with victory while the Coyotes drop to 6-9, 4-7 CCAA.
After a somewhat slow start, the Sonoma defense stepped up big late in the first half, holding the Coyotes scoreless over the final eight minutes. This stalwart effort turned a 20-15 deficit into a 32-20 halftime lead and left the crowd buzzing after watching the home team outscore the visitors 17-0 over the span.
However, if the Seawolves had intentions of cruising to an easy victory, the Coyotes had other plans. Over the first nine minutes of the second half, Cal State San Bernardino would go on a 21-2 run, taking the lead back and building it to as many as seven. In fact, they would lead 41-34 with 10:52 to go until
Taylor Vigil kick-started the Seawolf offense with a layup and free throw.
The Seawolves would come all the way back (again), taking the lead at 44-43 when Burgos sank one her her four three-pointers on the night. After trading the lead back and forth, the Seawolves got the upper hand when
Kristina Fahey answered a Coyote turnover with a three-pointer, making it 51-47 with 1:10 to go.
A pair of Vigil free throws iced it as the Coyotes were unable to find another basket and the Seawolves were able to waste away the final seconds.
The Seawolves shot 42.2% for the game, getting efficient nights from both Day (6-for-8) and Burgos (4-for-6). Day also had nine rebounds and
Alysa Ito finished with a game-hgh five assists.
Eliza Dy had a nice night for the Coyotes, finishing with 20 points, four assists, and three steals. While the Coyotes would turn the ball over just six times (to 17 for Sonoma), they were out-rebounded 39-28 and shot just 27.9% from the field.
The Seawolves return to action tomorrow night when they host UC San Diego. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
