BOX SCORE Cal State Monterey Bay 1, #19 Sonoma State 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Behind a 37th minute goal from Kristen Womack and an impressive defensive effort, the Cal State Monterye Bay women's soccer team stunned 19th-ranked Sonoma State with a 1-0 win over the Seawolves on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Otters held Sonoma State to just five shots in the game, their lowest output since the 2010 season. The loss is the second straight Friday home loss for the Seawolves as they drop to 7-2-2, 5-2-2 CCAA. In addition, the Otters (5-5-1, 4-4-1 CCAA) earned their first-ever win against Sonoma State.
From the first few minutes it became apparent that the Seawolves would struggle offensively against CSUMB. One of the top scoring teams in the west region, Sonoma had difficulty moving the ball deep into Otter territory and at the half they had mustered just two shots.
Cal State Monterey Bay didn't fare much better, managing just four shots in the first, but it would be a nice Kristen Womack effort late in the half that resulted in the game's only goal. Womack weaved through the Sonoma defense and struck from about 20 yards out to put the visitors out in front.
Sonoma State tried desperately to find a goal in the second half, but their passes were either intercepted or just out of reach for their intended target.
Allison Hadidian made three saves in net for Sonoma. Her counterpart, Lily Garza, made two.
Sonoma State held a 16-0-3 all-time record against Cal State Monterey Bay prior to Friday's game. They beat the Otters 4-0 in Seaside just under a month ago.
The Seawolves will try to bounce back on Sunday when they host Cal State Monterey Bay. Kick off is slated for 2:00 pm.
