CHICO, Calif. -- Cara Curtin broke a scoreless tie in the 67th minute on an assist from sister
Lauren Curtin, then Cara added an insurance goal just over 15 minutes later as the 22nd-ranked Sonoma State women's soccer team returned to the win column with a 2-0 shutout victory over host Chico State on Friday night at the University Soccer Stadium. The Seawolves improve to 8-2-3 overall and 6-2-3 in the CCAA. The Wildcats, meanwhile, stumble to 4-7-2 (2-7-2 CCAA).
The Seawolves dominated every aspect of the match, and before the Curtin's put Sonoma State on the scoreboard at 66:15, SSU had outshot Chico State 10-3, including and 6-1 margin in the first half. Cara's score on a pass from Lauren broke Sonoma's streak of 267 minutes without a goal, putting the visitors up 1-0.
Sonoma continued to pepper the Chico defense with shots and eventually held a 15-4 advantage in that category on the night. The 15th Seawolf attempt of the night found netting again, and it was Curtin again to deliver the blow at 81:57 on a pass from
Anna Martin. Curtin had six of the 15 SSU shots, while Martin added three.
Allison Hadidian, who is now fourth in the CCAA with a 0.79 goals against average, recorded her fifth shutout of the season making three stops on the night. Wildcat goalkeeper Brianna Furner also made three saves, but allowed the two goals in the match.
Sonoma State will now make a 525-mile trip south to face Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday at Premier Field in San Bernardino for a kickoff scheduled at 2:00 pm. The Seawolves then return home next Friday for their final home game of the 2013 season, a 12:30 pm matchup with Humboldt State.
