BOX SCORE Menlo 83, Sonoma State 73 -- Box Score
ATHERTON, Calif. -- After closing out the Inaugural Elsie Darling Classic with their first win of the season last Saturday, the Sonoma State women's basketball team looked to make it two in a row, going to Atherton to play NAIA-member Menlo College. But, after netting the first two points of the game on free throws by
Bronte Sheahan, the Seawolves saw their only lead of the game slip away early, eventually falling to 1-3 with an 83-73 loss to the Lady Oaks on Tuesday night. Menlo, the 24th-ranked team in the NAIA Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll, improved to 5-3.
Just over nine minutes into the game, the Seawolves found themselves down 12 by the score of 26-14, then turned up the heat and made a big run.
Kristina Fahey started it off with two free throws and a two-point bucket to cut the Lady Oaks lead to single digits. Four different Seawolves scored the next eight points to tie up the game at 26-26. On the ensuing play, an old fashioned three-point play by Menlo's Amber Lane halted the Seawolves' run to give the Lady Oaks the lead, for good. The lead was cut to one twice more in the first half which ended with Menlo leading 40-34.
The Menlo lead grew to as large as 16 in the 2nd half, but was cut to 10 by game's end. Though the Seawolves made more free throws (16-15), shot better from three-point range (.214 - .125) and nearly as good from the floor (.474 - .478), the second half lead extension by Menlo proved to be too much to handle. Getting outrebounded 37-31 and almost doubling the Lady Oaks in turnovers (13-7) put the Seawolves' bid at their first road win of the season on hold.
Sheahan led the Seawolves in scoring for the second straight game with 16, going a perfect 2 for 2 from both the free-throw and three-point lines. She added three rebounds and one assist. Two of her teammates also
reached the double-digit mark;
Hannah Sourek with 12 and
Molly Kommer with 10. Sourek led the team in rebounds with six followed by Kommer's five. Fahey also chipped in with nine points, three rebounds and one
assist.
Sonoma State wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule and, after 10-day break, the Seawolves will open up CCAA play on Dec. 6 against Cal State Stanislaus. Tip-off is at 5:30 pm in the Wolves' Den.
