ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State women's basketball team opened CCAA play Friday night against Cal State Stanislaus in search of a second straight home win. After a hard fought first half ending in a tie at 31-31, the Warriors controlled the paint and the game in the second half, prevailing with a 76-61 victory over the Seawolves. With the win, Cal State Stanislaus stays perfect at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in CCAA play, while the Seawolves fall to 1-4 (0-1 CCAA).
Sonoma State fell behind by as many as seven in the first half after a two-minute burst put the Warriors up 29-22 with 3:06 to go. Two free-throws from
Bronte Sheahan stopped the 6-0 run and started a 9-2 Seawolf finish to the half with a tie score. The Warriors' defense was seemingly unphased in the second half, holding the Seawolves to just 30 points and 1-7 (14.3%) from behind the three-point line.
After breaking the halftime tie with a 5-0 run in just 45 seconds, the Seawolves let the game slip away just over five minutes later (14:10) after a slew of turnovers helped the Warriors regain the lead 41-40. Cal State Stanislaus dominated the paint in the second half, outrebounding the Seawolves 20-10, eight of them on the offensive glass. For the game the Warriors scored more points in the paint (36-22), points off turnovers (22-4), second-chance points (21-8), and fast break points (12-4), ultimately adding up to a Seawolves loss.
Hannah Sourek led the Seawolves in scoring on the night with 15 points followed by 14 from
Taylor Acosta and 10 from Sheahan.
Natalie Del Carlo was the top girl on the glass for Sonoma State with nine rebounds, adding eight points on 4 of 7 shooting, all in the first half -- she saw just two minutes of action in the second half due to being in foul trouble. Acosta was second on the team in rebounds with six while shooting a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line, four of them coming in the second half.
Sonoma State will look to bounce back quickly, hosting their second CCAA game of the year Saturday night in The Wolves' Den at 7:30 pm against archrival Chico State.
