BOX SCORE #11 Chico State 65, Sonoma State 58 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Hannah Sourek got the Sonoma State women's basketball team within one point on a made jump shot at the 2:09 mark of the second half, but back-to-back turnovers with under a minute remaining proved to be fatal in Saturday's 65-58 loss to No. 11 Chico State at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park.
The Seawolves drop to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA. Meanwhile, the Wildcats, ranked 11th in this week's USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, notches their first conference victory in three tries, improving to 1-2 (5-2 overall).
Sonoma State battled with visiting Chico State the entire way, but never led by more than two points at any point in the contest. The teams fought through five ties and 10 lead changes, all of which came in the first half. The Seawolves pulled to within two points on three separate occasions and within one tally twice, but the Wildcats would never relinquish the lead, especially in the final two minutes of regulation where Chico ended the game on a 6-0 run in the final 47 seconds to earn the seven-point 65-58 win.
Sourek led all scorers with 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting, adding five rebounds.
Kristina Fahey chipped in with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists, knocking down three three-pointers. As a team, Sonoma fired on 36.8 percent of its shots (21-57) and an identical mark from three-point land (7-19).
Chico State got 16 points out of the hands of Jazmine Miller and 11 from Courtney Hamilton. Analise Riezebos was dominant down low, corralling 15 rebounds, including 12 off the defensive glass. The Wildcats connected on 41.2 percent of their shots (21-51) despite being just 4 of 16 from downtown (4-16).
Sonoma State will play just two more games in the 2013 calendar year, both against San Francisco State. The Seawolves will visit The Swamp on Dec. 13 at 5:30 pm to tangle with the Gators before a Dec. 22 matchup in Rohnert Park at 2:00 pm. SSU will then continue its 2013-14 schedule on the road at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 3.
