BOX SCORE Cal State East Bay 57, Sonoma State 44 -- Box Score
HAYWARD, Calif. -- Travis Newman and
Bronte Sheahan dropped in 10 points apiece and the Sonoma State women's basketball team drained eight three pointers, but it wouldn't be enough as the Seawolves suffered a 57-44 loss to host Cal State East Bay on Friday night at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward. Sonoma has lost eight of its last nine games, falling to 5-12 overall and 3-10 in the CCAA. The Pioneers, meanwhile, rise to 7-9 (5-7 CCAA).
The Seawolves were held to just 33.3 percent from the floor in Friday's contest on 14 fo 42 from the floor, but only six of the 14 made shots were from inside the three-point arc. In fact, five of the seven made shots by SSU in the first half came from beyond the arc as Sonoma trailed 31-22 at half.
Cal State East Bay led for the majority of the game; Sonoma State held leads of 3-0 and 5-3 early in the ballgame before the Pioneers went ahead at the 16:13 mark and never looked back. The Seawolves would trail by just one point at 12-11 after a three-pointer by
Brianna Burgos, but CSUEB began a 14-3 run over the next six minutes to take a 26-14 lead at the seven-minute mark of the opening period. The hosts advantage would remain at double digits until a three-pointer by Newman at the end of the half cut the halftime deficit to nine.
In the second half, the Pioneers remained in command, stretching their lead to as much as 16 points at the midway point of the period, but the Seawolves wouldn't go away quietly. With CSUEB leading 50-34, SSU rode a 10-1 run over the next eight minutes, but the 16-point deficit would prove to be too much to overcome as the Pioneers scored the final six points of the game, holding the Seawolves scoreless in the last 2:34.
Newman and Sheahan accounted for nearly half of Sonoma State's total in the game,
Kristina Fahey chipped in with six points and
Brianna Burgos netted five. Cal State East Bay got 13 points from Marlene MacMillan, who led all scorers and was the only player for CSUEB in double figures. The Pioneers, who went 22 of 55 from the floor (40 percent), forced 26 SSU turnovers while giving the ball away 19 times.
Sonoma State will return to action on Saturday night when it heads southwest to Seaside to face Cal State Monterey Bay. The game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at The Kelp Bed.
