BOX SCORE #27 Sonoma State 5, Western Oregon 4: Box Score | Archived Video Broadcast
ROHNERT PARK -- The Sonoma State baseball team used six pitchers and put across five runs on five hits, en route to a 5-4 victory in the series finale against the Western Oregon Wolves. The Seawolves were able to win the four-game series, 3-1, getting revenge after losing the series to WOU 4-1 in 2012. Sonoma State improves to 4-1 overall after the first week of the young season, while Western Oregon drops below the break-even point at 3-4.
Sonoma State got on the board early when on a
Devon Zenn walk, WOU catcher Scott David threw down to third base in attempts to throw out
Steven Filippi who was running on the play. Though the ball was dead due to the walk, David's throw went past the third baseman and into left field, allowing Filippi and
Sam Montgomery to score on the throwing error, giving SSU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Sonoma State starter
Matt Manfre was pulled out of the game early, after giving up two runs in one and one-third innings. The Wolves would go on to score three times in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead. Sonoma State came back in the bottom of the third inning when Zenn cashed in on a two-RBI single through the right side, driving in Montgomery and
Jackson Stogner, who walked to lead off the inning.
Western Oregon would not go quietly though, as Garrett Harpole hit a solo jack to left field to tie the game at four runs apiece in the top of the sixth inning. Sonoma State pitcher
George Asmus -- who started and received the win in Tuesday's win over SF State -- played the role of reliever, coming on in the seventh inning to shut down the Western Oregon offense for the final three innings, earning his second win of the week. Sonoma State got the eventual winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when pinch hitter Scott Fluery nailed an RBI single, allowing pinch runner
Kyle Kearney to score from second.
Western Oregon had a baserunner in each of the final three innings, but an impressive double-play by Fleury at third base and four strikeouts by Asmus negated any hopes of a late comeback by WOU.
Western Oregon starter Ben Schiltz threw for five innings, giving up four runs on four hits, two of which were earned; he also struck out six and walked two batters. Reliever Ethan Flory was tagged with the loss, however, as he took the mound in the sixth inning and gave up the eventual winning run.
While Zenn went 1-for-3 at the plate, it was a big hit as it drove in two of the Seawolves five runs. Montgomery went 2-for-4 at the dish, scoring two runs, while Fleury made the most of his only plate appearence, knocking in the fifth and winning run in the 5-4 victory.
Sonoma State will head to Riverside, Calif. for a three-game series against Cal Baptist, who is 2-4 overall thus far this season.
