BOX SCORE Sonoma State 72, Cal State Dominguez Hills 71 -- Box Score
CARSON, Calif. -- The Sonoma State women's basketball team erased an 11-point deficit in the final nine minutes of regulation and a pair of
Brianna Burgos free throws with 17 seconds left to play would turn out to be the tying and game-winning points as the Seawolves held on to defeat host Cal State Dominguez Hills, 72-71, on Friday night at the Torodome in Carson, Calif. Sonoma (7-14, 5-12 CCAA) notches its first road victory of the season, moving into a tie for 10th place in the conference standings with five regular season games to play. The Toros drop to 7-14 (6-11 CCAA), falling into ninth place in the CCAA.
Freshman
Hannah Sourek netted a career-high 17 points to lead three other Seawolves in double figures on Friday night --
Taylor Vigil chipped in with 12 points while
Travis Newman and Burgos added 11 apiece.
Cal State Dominguez Hills led for all but six-and-a-half minutes in the game and Sonoma State's largest lead was a two-point advantage at 4-2, just 1:30 into the first half. It didn't matter in the end as the Seawolves, who trailed by 11 with nine minutes to play, scored 11 straight points over the next two minutes to knot the game at 55-all.
Despite many of the Toro players facing foul trouble, CSUDH extended its lead back out to five points at 65-60 with 4:00 left in the contest. On consecutive trips down the floor, however, SSU tied it back up again on a jumper by Vigil and a three-pointer by Newman with 3:14 to play. A pair of free throws and a jumper by the Toros got the hosts back up by four, but the Seawolves would end the game on a 7-2 run in the final 1:50, thanks to back-to-back layups by
Kristina Fahey and three free throws -- two from the hands of Burgos -- to secure its first win in eight road games thus far in 2012-13.
Sourek more than doubled her previous season-high of eight points on 6 fo 13 from the floor, in addition to 5 of 11 from the charity stripe. She also added six rebounds, an assist and a block in SSU's winning effort. Vigil netted her 12 points on 6 of 8 from the hardwood, Burgos had 11 (more than half of which came from the free throw line -- 6 for 6) with four assists and a steal in 25 minutes off the bench, and Newman connected on 4 of 11 from the floor to score 11 points with seven rebounds and three assists.
The Seawolves hit 47.3 percent of their shots (26-55), but was just 51.6 percent from the free throw line (16-31). The Toros, meanwhile, had a hot hand, shooting 50.9 percent from the floor on 27 of 53, but SSU forced 13 CSUDH turnovers in the second half, which helped Sonoma come out on top. Julia Poecksteiner and Monay Lee recorded 17 points each for Cal State Dominguez Hills in the loss.
Sonoma State looks to continue the momentum into Saturday's matchup with the Golden Eagles of Cal State L.A. Tip off from the Eagles Nest is set for 5:30 p.m.
