Seawolves Continue Push Towards Third Straight CCAA Berth

Taylor Vigil and three other SSU seniors will take part in their final home games of their career this weekend.
ROHNERT PARK -- With the end of the regular season looming, the Sonoma State women's basketball team will look to ride their current hot streak into a potential CCAA playoff berth. The Seawolves (8-14, 6-12 CCAA) have won three of their last four games, including a sweep on the road last weekend, putting SSU two games out of the eighth and final spot of the CCAA tournament with four contests to play.  Sonoma will host its final home games of the season, welcoming Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona to town on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

WINNING PAST:  In the last four games, the Seawolves have won three, including their first two road wins of the 2012-13 season last weekend over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.  Sonoma State also was able to salvage a split of the season series against Cal State Stanislaus two weeks ago to start the push towards the playoffs.  The Seawolves are in the midst of a two-game winning streak, tying their season high, last winning two in a row when they beat then-No. 6 ranked Western Washington and Dominican in back-to-back games in December.

SCOUTING HUMBOLDT STATE:  The Lumberjacks of Humboldt State come into The Wolves' Den sporting an overall record of 9-15, with a 5-13 mark in CCAA play after having lost their last four games by an average of 9.5 points.  In their previous meeting in Arcata, the Lumberjacks took care of Sonoma State in a 66-58 victory.  However, the Seawolves look to retaliate as SSU holds the narrow 33-31 margin in the all-time series, holding HSU to a 13-19 record inside The Wolves' Den, dating back to 1982.  Currently leading the conference and the squad in scoring is guard Lisa Petty, who is averaging an outstanding 18.7 points per game.  In addition to her at-will scoring, Petty is also tied for second in the conference in rebounds per game, averaging 7.8 boards per contest.  Teammate Kelly Kline is ranked fifth in the conference in field goal percentage, draining her shots 48.8 percent of the time.

SCOUTING CAL POLY POMONA:  Suffering a five-game losing streak, the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona hold an even .500 record in overall (11-11) and conference (9-9) records, good enough to hold the sixth spot in the CCAA standings with four games left.  Back in January, the Broncos made the most of their Pack the Gym night, beating the Seawolves, 62-48, in what was the fifth game in their early-season seven-game win streak.  However, CPP is 8-9 when playing on Sonoma State's home court, going back to 1990.  At fifth in the conference, J.J. Judge leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.4 points ger game, followed by Ashley Boggs at 11.1, who is second on the team.  Jennifer Bryant is another Bronco mentioned among the CCAA leaders, hitting 41.9 percent of her three-point attempts; she ranks third on the conference leaderboard in that category.  Cal Poly Pomona holds the 26-9 all-time series advantage over Sonoma State.

SECOND TIME'S A CHARM:  This season, Sonoma State has been able to salvage the season split against four of five teams in which it lost their first meeting to.  The Seawolves will attempt to make it six for seven this weekend should they earn victories over Humboldt State and Cal Poly Pomona.

SEAWOLF SENIOR SATURDAY:  Prior to Saturday's contest with Cal Poly Pomona, the final home game for Sonoma State this season, four Seawolf seniors -- Elizabeth Day, Alysa Ito, Marie Sweet and Taylor Vigil -- will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony.

SEAWOLF SENIOR SATURDAY SUCCESS (Because we like words that start with an 'S'):  Sonoma State is 16-15 all-time in its final home game of the regular season.

SEAWOLVES' NOTES:  In the last two wins, freshmen Hannah Sourek and Brianna Burgos have been the leading scorers, earning season-highs of 17 and 19 points, respectively.  The Sonoma State offense has been led by Taylor Vigil for the majority of the season, and continues to be, as she averages 8.2 points per game.  However, Travis Newman is hot on her heals averaging 8.1 points per contest.  Vigil is also third in the conference in field goal efficiency, nailing 49.7 percent of her shots.  Elizabeth Day has been a force in the paint for SSU as she leads the team in rebounds with 142, averaging 6.5 per game.  Also, Day is second in the CCAA in field goal percentage, hitting slightly over 50 percent of her shots.  Also joining the CCAA leaderboard, Kristina Fahey is fifth in the conference in three-point field goal percentage, sinking 36.5 percent of her shots from three-point land.  Alysa Ito has totaled 81 assists in 18 games this season, leading the team and tying for second in the conference, dishing out 3.7 assists per game.
