ROHNERT PARK -- Taylor Vigil led a trio of players in double figures with 14 points, including 10 in the second half, to push the Sonoma State women's basketball team to a convincing 71-60 victory over visiting Humboldt State on Friday night at The Wolves' Den. The Seawolves (9-14, 7-12 CCAA) have now won four of their last five and are just one game out of eighth place in the CCAA standings with three to play. The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, fall into 11th place at 5-14 in conference play (9-16 overall).
Humboldt got off to a fast start, scoring eight of the game's first 10 points to take an 8-2 lead at the 17-minute mark of the opening half. The six-point lead would end up being its largest lead of the night, achieving it one other time -- a 15-9 lead with 11:37 left in the half. Sonoma stayed close, but didn't take the lead until a free throw by
Kristina Fahey put the hosts up by one at 29-28 at the 2:28 mark. A layup by the Lumberjacks' Danielle Gaumer 14 seconds later put HSU back in the lead and neither team would score in the final 2:14 of the half.
Fahey would lead all players with nine points in the opening 20 minutes, but Sonoma State, as a team, trailed Humboldt State in shot efficiency (42.3 percent-36.4 percent) even though SSU made one more shot from the floor (12-11).
The Lumberjacks jumped back out to a lead of five points by scoring the second half's first four points. The Seawolves then mounted their comeback. Trailing by four at a score of 37-33, SSU went on a 12-0 run to spin the deficit to an eight-point lead at 45-37 in a span of two-and-a-half minutes. The Seawolves remained in command, even stretching their lead to as much as 16 points (64-48) with 3:41 left in the contest, putting the game out of reach from the visiting 'Jacks.
It was thanks to a 51.6 percent clip from the floor in the final 20 minutes (16 for 31), while the Sonoma defense held the Humboldt offense to just 30 percent on 9 of 30 shooting. 10 of Vigil's team-high 14 points came in the second half alone, matching
Alysa Ito's scoring output in the final half as well. Ito finished with 12 points, as did Fahey.
Elizabeth Day chipped in with nine points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
For Humboldt State, Lisa Petty netted a game-high 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting, including 2 of 4 from three-point range. Caitie Richards recorded 11, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
