BOX SCORE ROHNERT PARK-- Behind stellar pitching and timely hitting, the Sonoma State baseball team was able to win their 13th-consecutive season opener in a 6-0 victory over the San Francisco State Gators on Tuesday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.  Sonoma State is now 1-0 overall, while the Gators drop to 0-4 after being swept in a three-game series against Fresno Pacific last weekend.  While SFSU is a conference opponent, this did not count as a conference match-up between the two teams.  The Gators will return to Rohnert Park for a double-header on March 23, 2013.
Things got started in the third inning for Sonoma State when
Sam Montgomery drove in Jeffery Boulware for the Seawolves' first run of the game, giving them a 1-0 lead.  Later, in the bottom the fifth inning, the Seawolves struck again.  After three straight singles by
Steven Filippi, Montgomery, and
Garrett Gooselaw,
Tyler Glenn drew a walk, earning an RBI the hard way.  With the bases still loaded,
Garrett Schwartz was hit by a pitch, allowing Montgomery to score the second run of the inning.
Scott Harkin was able to tally his first RBI as a Seawolf when he hit in Gooselaw on a groundout to second base.  Already with a 4-0 lead, Sonoma State recorded two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game at the eventual final score of 6-0.  Glenn drew a four-pitch walk and came around to score on a passed ball, which was followed by a Boulware sacrifice fly that scored Harkin from third.
The two-three-four lineup slots in Filippi, Montgomery, and Gooselaw each contributed two hits, while Montgomery was the only one with an RBI.  Glenn, Schwartz, Harkin and Boulware each drove in one run in the win while recording one hit on the day.  Newcomer
George Asmus got the start and his first win in Seawolf blue, giving up two hits and walking one, while striking out six batters in four innings of work.
Jayson Richards,
Austin Wiggins,
Glenn Wallace and Harkin all made appearences in relief of Asmus, giving up a combine three hits and two walks, while fanning five SF State batters.
While San Francisco State tallied five hits and drew three walks, Sonoma State was able to turn four double plays, negating any offense the Gators had hoped for.  Dillion Meyer, Carter Loud, Mark Lindsay, Justin Lamb, and Peter Quigley all contributed one hit in the loss.  Starting pitcher Jack Veronin lasted three innings, giving up one run on four hits in his first loss of the season.
Sonoma State will be back in action this weekend, beginning a four-game series with the Western Oregon Wolves on Friday at 2:00 pm in Rohnert Park, Calif. at Seawolf Diamond.
