BOX SCORE #27 Sonoma State 7, #31 Western Oregon 0 -- Box Score

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State pitchers extended their shutout streak to 18 innings to start the season on Saturday with a sparkling 7-0 win over Western Oregon in the opener of a four-game set at Seawolf Diamond.  Senior Harmen Sidhu got the ball rolling, allowing just two hits over four innings, as the 27th-ranked Seawolves performed well in every aspect of the game.  Sonoma improves to 2-0 on the season while 31st-ranked Western Oregon drops to 2-2.

The Seawolves picked up two runs in the first inning to set the tone.  Jackson Stogner scampered home with the first score on an error by the Western Oregon center fielder, while Devon Zenn produced the next with a sacrifice fly.

Porous defense would be a big part of the story for Western Oregon as they committed two errors in the first on their way to five in the game.  The other problem proved to be leaving runners on base.  Despite leaving eight runners on in the first five innings, a nice start by A.J. Burke (L, 0-1) kept them in the ball game, down just 2-0.

In the fifth, the Seawolves tacked on a couple more on RBI singles by Garrett Schwartz and Scott Harkin

The lead was pushed to 5-0 in the seventh and then 7-0 in the ninth as the Seawolves used timely hitting to pull away down the stretch.

Western Oregon would end up leaving 13 runners on base in the game.

Sonoma State got three hits from Sam Montgomery and two more from both Zenn and Schwartz.  Their efforts paced a 12-hit attack.

Sidhu went four innings, yielding two hits and three walks, while striking out four.  He gave way to Ian Ocon (2.2 IP), Steven Zaharias (2.0 IP) and Jon Richards (0.1 IP), who all did a successful job in preserving the shutout.

With only four hits overall, no Western Oregon player would have more than one.  David Scott, who had one of those hits, walked three times as well.

The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader set for 11:00 am.
