#41 Sonoma State 7, Metro State 2

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- David Hutton fought off his opponent at No. 4 singles to win by a narrow margin in a third-set tiebreaker and four other Sonoma State men's tennis players earned singles victories in straight sets, helping the 41st-ranked Seawolves to a convincing 7-2 victory over Metro State on Saturday morning in Glendale, Ariz.  Sonoma State (2-3) has won two straight matches since opening up the season at 0-3, while Metro State falls to 5-3.

SSU took an early 2-1 match lead as Matt Roberts/Ryan Harris and Jimmy Manning/Drexler Dy grabbed wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

Roberts and Robert Henry snatched identical 6-2, 6-2 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.  Harris and Vincent Paganetti also won in straight sets at the bottom of the lineup; the only point earned by Metro State in singles play was at No. 3 when Nick Baker came back after losing the first set to Drexler Dy to win 6-3 in the second set and 10-7 in the tiebreaker.

It was at No. 4 singles that featured the ultimate battle.  Hutton won the first set 6-3 before the second set was forced to be decided by a tiebreaker.  After going back and forth Metro State's John Qualls was able to pull out the tiebreaking win to knot the match at one set apiece.  Both players continued the battle well into the third-set tiebreaker, but it would be Hutton that escaped, though, with the narrow and emotional 11-9 victory.

Sonoma State's trip to Arizona continues on Saturday when it faces Point Loma Nazarene at 9:00 a.m.  It will be one of two matches for SSU on Saturday as the Seawolves will then face Montana State Billings six hours later at 3:00 p.m.
