LAS VEGAS -- After losing the first game on Friday, the Sonoma State softball team rebounded in the second, salvaging a split on day one of the MSUB Desert Stinger in Las Vegas. The Seawolves lost 10-7 to the University of Mary earlier in the day before taking a 10-7 win over Central Washington under the lights.
Keisi Chinen had a huge day, going 4 for 6 with a home run, four RBI and three runs scored, while
Ali Palermo contributed four hits (including two doubles and a home run) with two RBI and also three runs scored. Sonoma State will play Dixie State and Western Oregon on day two of the tournament Saturday.

In a game featuring 17 runs on offense, neither team crossed the plate until Chinen smacked Sonoma State's first home run of the season; a 2-2 pitch that she sailed over the fence. It also scored
Ali Palermo, who doubled to lead off the inning.
It didn't take long for the University of Mary to counter back, as
Samantha Lipperd surrendered the first of three home runs by the Marauders in the game. It would be Mendez to deliver the blow, a three-run shot that gave UMARY the 3-2 lead. The lead would extend to 4-2 on a leadoff blast by Hadley in the top of the fourth inning.
The Seawolves would come storming back in their half of the fourth, beginning with a leadoff single by Palermo, who then advanced to second on a groundout by Chinen.
Holli Brown came up and doubled to right center, scoring Palermo to cut the deficit to 4-3. Brown would then come around to score and knot the game at 4-4 after an illegal pitch and a defensive error allowed her to cross the plate.
Samantha Beauchamp continued the hit parade with a double to left center, plating
Ancia Purdy, putting SSU back in the lead at 5-4.
The back-and-forth battle continued in the next half inning when the Marauders' Ormsby hammered a two-run home run to regain a lead, this time at 6-5 in the top of the fifth. In Sonoma's half of the fifth, Chinen brought home
Vanessa Currie andPalermo's attempt to score on Chinen's single was denied and the game again became deadlocked at 6-6.
That's when the University of Mary took control, scoring four runs on five hits to take a commanding 10-6 lead. Neither team scored again until the Seawolves, in their last at bat in the bottom of the seventh, loaded the bases with no outs. UMARY pitcher Erin Keen got Palermo to go down on strikes, but walked Chinen to bring in a run to make it 10-7. However, Keen got Brown to strike out and forced Purdy to groundout to end the game.
Chinen ended the contest going 2 for 3 with four RBI and a run scored, Palermo went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and Brown recorded her first-career multi-hit game with a 2 for 4 effort, adding an RBI and a run scored. Uncharacteristically, Lipperd (1-1) allowed 14 hits, 10 runs (nine earned) and four walks in six innings, fanning eight batters.
Amanda Llerena came in to work the seventh inning, allowing a walk, but nothing more.
UMARY's Keen went the distance for the Marauders and earned the victory, despite giving up 12 hits, seven runs and four walks, striking out five. Five different Marauders recorded two or more hits, led by the 3 for 3 effort of Ormsby, who brought home three runs.
