Seawolves Hunt For Wins Over Visiting Warriors, Wildcats

Head coach Mark Rigby talks to his team during a time out last Friday at Cal State East Bay.
ROHNERT PARK -- It was not long ago that the Sonoma State women's basketball team sported an even 5-5 overall record, coming off an upset of then-No. 6-ranked Western Washington.  Since then, the Seawolves are 2-9 and have won just one game in the 2013 calendar year.  However, SSU will be back in the friendly confines of The Wolves' Den this weekend to take on rivals Cal State Stanislaus and No. 11 Chico State and attempt to avenge its losses to the Warriors and Wildcats just a little over a month ago.  Sonoma State is currently 11th in the conference standings at 3-11 in the CCAA (5-13 overall).

BROADCAST INFORMATION: Tune in to Seawolf Sports Network to listen to Tim Davidson call the action live from The Wolves' Den.  Link to the live stats and live video feed are provided below.  Both games are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.

PIONEERS, OTTERS RECAP:  Last weekend, the Seawolves suffered two tough losses to Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Pioneers were able to salvage a 57-47 victory over the Seawolves to split the season series after Sonoma State beat CSUEB 63-50 back in December of 2012.  Travis Newman and Bronte Sheahan each had 10 points apiece in the loss.  Sonoma State dealt with heartbreak as a three-pointer in the last seconds against Cal State Monterey Bay gave the Seawolves the 54-51 loss, alllowing the Otters to sweep the season series.  Kristina Fahey was the Seawolves leading scorer against CSUMB with 12 points, while Newman and Elizabeth Day pitched in with 11 points each.

SCOUTING CAL STATE STANISLAUS:  The Warriors of Cal State Stanislaus are currently at the bottom of the CCAA standings with a 1-13 conference record (2-17 overall) and are on an eight-game losing streak.  The Warriors last win came against Sonoma State in a 72-65 contest back on Jan. 5.  However, the silver lining for SSU is that CSUS is 0-10 on the road this season.  In addition to the win over Sonoma State, the Warriors second win came in a 68-61 victory over Holy Names.  Lauren Goode has done it all for the Warriors, leading the team in scoring (16.2 ppg) and in rebounds (7.4 rpg).  The next closest top scorer for CSU Stanislaus is averaging 9.7 points per game (Briana Cotton).  Goode also ranks fourth in the conference with her scoring average.  As a team, Cal State Stanislaus is averaging 55.8 points per game.  The Warriors are 15-15 inside The Wolves' Den all-time.

SCOUTING CHICO STATE:  In their last meeting, the Wildcats dominated the Seawolves in a 70-48 win, and they haven't let up.  Chico State, the 11th-ranked team in this week's USA Today/NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, sits atop the CCAA standings with a record of 12-2 (16-2 overall) and is presently on a three-game winning streak.  The Wildcats also hold the advantage in the all-time series, leading the Seawolves 47-18, while posting a 20-12 record inside The Wolves' Den.  Jazmine Miller leads the team, averaging 12.9 points per game and is fourth in the conference with a 42.5 shooting percentage from beyond the arc.  Following closely is McKenzie Dalthorp who averages 10.9 points per game.  Along with Miller, Monnie Davidson-Mays leads the team in rebounds per game, collecting 5.8 boards per game.

SEAWOLVES' NOTES:  Sonoma State leads the all-time series against Cal State Stanislaus 42-27.  Taylor Vigil leads the team in scoring with 7.9 points per game, while Travis Newman is hot on her heals, averaging 7.5 points per game.  Assist leader Alysa Ito now has 65 assists on the season, surpassing last seasons total of 64.  Sonoma State is on a three-game skid after beating Cal State San Bernardino 53-50 on Jan. 25.  While they are playing at home this weekend, Sonoma State has gone 0-10 on the road this season, their worst road record since the 1987-88 season when they were 1-12 away from its home court.  There are four road games remaining in the 2012-13 season.  Sonoma State will host its annual Pink Out night on Friday agaisnt Cal State Stanislaus to honor Breast Cancer Awareness and continue the festivities with Pack the Den night on Saturday against archrival Chico State.
