Game Two: Western Oregon 5, Sonoma State 3 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Sonoma State took the first game of their non-conference doubleheader with Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon, 5-2, behind stellar pitching and timely hitting performances. It would be the Wolves, however, coming from behind with a five-run sixth inning to steal the nightcap, 5-3, and earn a split. Following Saturday's results, the Seawolves will enter Sunday's series finale with a 3-1 overall record while the Wolves go in at 3-3.
Austin Wiggins got the start in game one and he pitched superbly, scattering just three hits over four innings of work. His start helped the Seawolves push their season-opening shutout streak to 22 innings and it would get to 24 and a third before Sonoma would finally allow an opponent to touch the plate.
The Seawolves got on the board in the second inning in game one when
Devon Zenn scampered home as the second leg of a double steal. It would become 3-0 just an inning later when
Sam Montgomery and
Steven Filippi singled in runs.
While Western Oregon would draw to 3-1 in the sixth, the Seawolves quickly answered with a couple of runs of their own, the big blast being an RBI double by
Justin Serrao. Up 5-1 after six, the Seawolves cruised until the ninth when the Wolves loaded the bases with two outs.
Scott Harkin was able to get Blake Miller swinging, however, to end the game.
The Seawolves got two hits from both Zenn and Filippi to lead a seven-hit output.
Taylor Herbert pitched four innings in relief, allowing one run and walking none.
The Wolves actually out-hit the Seawolves in the opener, 9-7. Daniel McNabb had three to lead the way. Spenser Watkins was the losing pitcher after throwing 5.1 innings and allowing five runs.
The Seawolves got out to a strong start in game two, as well, plating one in the first, one in the third, and yet another in the fourth. They were on cruise control with
Glenn Wallace dealing on the mound. The senior surrendered just one hits over his four innings of work.
Trouble found the Seawolves, however, in the sixth. Following a single and a lineout, Blake Miller hit into a fielder's choice, but the throw by
Jeffrey Boulware went wide. That opened the door to three more hits for Western Oregon including a big bases-clearing triple by Josh Wong.
The Seawolvse threatened in the seventh with a walk and a hit by pitch, but Kody Stone was able to close the door.
Boulware had a very solid game at the plate, going 4-for-4. Like the first game, the losing team ended up with more hits than the winners, as Sonoma had nine to just five for Western Oregon.
Gary Steindorf went four innings as the starter, but it was Zach Nuno getting the win with two shutout innings of relief. Stone was credited with the save.
The Seawolves and Wolves will close out their four-game series tomorrow with a single game starting at 11:00 am.
