BOX SCORE #11 Chico State 66, Sonoma State 48 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- A slow start plagued Sonoma State on Saturday night as they came up on the losing end of a 66-48 decision to Chico State before the largest crowd of the year at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves could must just 15 points in the first half, falling behind the 11th-ranked Wildcats by 11 at the break and, despite a much improved second half, they couldn't quite get back in the game. Sonoma falls to 6-14, 4-12 CCAA while first place Chico improves to 18-2, 14-2 CCAA.
A strong defensive effort gave the Seawolves the upper hand in the early going as they held the Wildcats to just five points in the first seven minutes to lead 8-5 at the 12:51 mark. However, an offensive cold streak that saw Sonoma State score just seven minutes the rest of the half allowed Chico to enter the locker room with a comfortable 26-15 edge.
Chico didn't let off the gas in the second half, using a 12-0 run to build the lead to as many 23 - at 40-17 with 14:08 to go. The Seawolves would slowly chisel away at the margin and with a 23-12 run of their own, they got within 12 points. Unfortunately, that's as close as they'd get, as the Wildcats pulled away to win by 18.
Sonoma State overcame a dismal 22.2% shooting mark in the first half to shoot a much more respectable 38.7% in the second. They out-rebounded Chico State 41-39 and had as many three-pointers, five.
