BOX SCORE UC SAN DIEGO 11, #22 SONOMA STATE 3 – BOX SCORE
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Sonoma State baseball team looked to complete the four-game series sweep of the UC San Diego Tritons on Sunday morning, but UCSD had other ideas, tallying 11 runs to steal a win from the Seawolves by a final score of 11-3. Sonoma State now holds a record of 13-5, 5-3 CCAA, while UC San Diego moves to 12-11, 7-9 CCAA.
The Tritons got on the board early in this one, scoring a run in the first inning. The Seawolves countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning on a two-out double by
Marcus Kimura that drove in
Scott Harkin and
Jackson Stogner, giving SSU a 2-1 lead.
Sonoma State would not hold the narrow lead for long as UCSD strung together four straight hits to start the fourth inning, which garnered three runs. But the Tritons were not finished as Richard Seigel hit a deep ball over the right center field fence that plated three runs, all part of the UCSD seven run fourth inning, putting the visiting team on top 8-2.
In the bottom half of the fourth,
Devon Zenn doubled with one out and was knocked in by
Garrett Schwartz two batters later to slightly close the gap at a score of 8-3. Unfortunately, SSU could only produce two more hits in the final five innings, as strong pitching from UCSD starter Blake Fassler and company silenced the feared Seawolf offense. UC San Diego scored once in the eighth and twice in the ninth inning to put the game away at a final score of 11-3.
The Seawolves did scatter seven hits, two coming from the bat of Schwartz while Kimura contributed one hit; he recorded two RBI's in the loss.
Austin Wiggins (1-1) got the call from coach Goelz to start game, but would give up six runs on seven hits (five earned), while fanning three batters in three in one-third innings en route to his first loss of the season.
For the Tritons, Danny Susdorf had a 3-for-5, two RBI and a run scored day offensively, while Troy Cruz and Corbin Wirta each had two hit, two RBI days at the plate. On the mound, Fassler (3-1) pitched six strong innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out eight Seawolves. David Hart, Chad Rieser, and Scott Zeman gave up a combine two hits and zero runs over three innings in relief of Fassler.
Sonoma State will continue its eight game home stand next weekend when the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino visit Seawolf Diamond. The four-game series will kick off on Friday, March 15, with first pitch set for 2:00 pm.
