ROHNERT PARK – Two very different games took place on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond as Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino would go on to split the twin bill.  Both offenses produced a combined 19 runs in game one, but the Seawolves had the upper hand, winning 13-6.  However, game two took three extra innings to decide a winner, this time the Coyotes came through in the tenth inning to take a 5-2 win from the 20th-ranked Seawolves for the split.  Sonoma State now sports a record of 15-6, 7-3 CCAA while CSUSB snaps their nine game losing streak and moves to 10-13, 4-11 CCAA.

GAME 1: #20 SONOMA STATE 13, CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO 6 – BOX SCORE
The morning game featured a combined 19 runs on a combined 29 hits, including a solo homerun by Garrett Schwartz, part of his 3-for-4, four RBI, two run scored day offensively.

Cal State San Bernardino was able to plate three runs in the top of the first inning to give the visitors a 3-0 lead, but Sonoma would score four in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead.  In fact, the Seawolves scored in four consecutive innings, taking a 10-5 lead into the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, SSU strung together six straight hits, including the aforementioned Schwartz homerun, a two-RBI single by Gary Detwiler, and an RBI double by Jackson Stogner for one of two four-run innings.

Sonoma State put up a four spot yet again, this time in the fourth inning, all coming with two outs.  Scott Harkin started the scoring rally with an RBI single, one of his two RBIs for the game.  After Marcus Kimura was walked and Devon Zenn was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Schwartz smacked a bases-clearing double to deep left field, giving the Seawolves a 9-3 lead.  Cal State San Bernardino scored two runs in the fifth, and one in the seventh to slightly close the gap to four runs, at 10-6.  However, SSU put up three more runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach at a score of 13-6.

George Asmus (5-0) got the start for the Seawolves and kept his record blemish free, throwing for six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits white striking out six.  Offensively, every starter for the Seawolves tallied at least one hit in the game.  In addition to Schwartz's three hits, Nathan Bernstein and Shawn Walters also record three hits.  Detwiler and Harkin each recorded two hits and had three and two RBIs, respectively.  Scott Templeton, Stogner, Kimura, and Zenn each contributed one hit in the victory.

Ruben Rios (3-3) started for the Coyotes, but only pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits in his third loss of the season.  Three pitchers followed Rios and gave up a combined five runs in the loss.  The bright spot offensively for CSUSB was leadoff hitter Christian Gomez, who went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored.  Seven other players had hits for San Bernardino in the loss.

GAME 2: CAL STATE SAN BERNARDINO 5, #20 SONOMA STATE 2 (F/10) – BOX SCORE
In a game that was scheduled for seven innings, it took ten to decide a winner as the nightcap of the doubleheader turned into a pitching duel early on.

Both offences were quiet for the first three innings, but Cal State San Bernardino came through in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Billy Hamilton, scoring Steven Chagolla.  However, Sonoma State answered back in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at 1-1, also on a sacrifice fly that scored Garrett Schwartz

The back-and-forth scoring continued in the ninth inning when the Coyotes pulled ahead on yet another sacrifice fly, this time by Richard Mount to score Trevor McMaster to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth.  Sonoma State would be able to answer back again on the fourth sacrifice fly of the game to tie the contest at 2-2.

Unfortunately for the home team, Cal State San Bernardino recorded three runs in the top of the tenth inning to take a 5-2 lead, a deficit the Seawolves would not be able to come back from in the bottom half of the tenth, taking the 5-2 loss.

Glenn Wallace pitched stellar ball for the Seawolves, but was faced with a no decision after hurling the ball for nine solid innings, giving up two runs on six hits while striking out five.  Jayson Richards (1-1) received the loss in relief, as he gave up the final three runs to the visitors.  Scott Harkin and Garrett Gooselaw recorded identical lines at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Matt LeVert (1-0) received his first win in relief of starter Ken Kissell for the Coyotes after Kissell allowed only one run on five hits through six innings of work.  Kerry Kelley tallied his first save of the season by coming in in the tenth inning to get the final out of the game.  Remington Miller had the best batting line for the Coyotes, going 3-for-3 with an RBI after coming in to pinch-hit in the seventh inning.

Sonoma State and Cal State San Bernardino will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow with a single game beginning at 11:00 am.
