ROHNERT PARK – After coming from behind to grab a late-inning win yesterday in San Francisco, the series shifted to Seawolf Diamond on Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader between northern California rivals. The Seawolves blanked the Gators in game one behind another stellar pitching performance from
Harmen Sidhu (5-1), who pitched for seven innings, struck out eight batters, and gave up five hits en route to his fifth win of the season. The nightcap saw a 1-1 tie go into the bottom of the seventh and final inning, before
Marcus Kimura was able to drive in the winning run in walk-off fashion. Sonoma State guarantees itself a series win and improves their record to 18-7, 10-5 CCAA and SF State drops to 9-18, 6-13 in the conference.
GAME ONE: #24 SONOMA STATE 4, SAN FRANCISCO STATE 0 – BOX SCORE
Sonoma State struck early, plating three runs in the first inning, one by way of a balk by SFSU starting pitcher Jack Jorgensen (0-2) that let
Justin Serrao to score from third.
Garrett Schwartz continued his hot streak, doubling in a run for the second run of the inning. Starting third baseman
Nathan Bernstein drove in
Devon Zenn on a groundout to second base, giving SSU a 3-0 lead.
Three runs would be more than enough as the Gators could only scatter six hits against Sidhu and the 24
th-ranked Seawolves, unable to get any runs home. Sonoma State scored one more run in the fourth inning when Schwartz drove in his second run of the game on an infield single, giving the hosts the eventual final score of 4-0.
Offensively for the Seawolves,
Scott Harkin, Kimura, Zenn, and Schwartz all had two his in the win, while Bernstein contributed an RBI. Miguel Flores led the Gator offense with two hits in four at bats.
GAME TWO: #24 SONOMA STATE 2, SAN FRANCISCO STATE 1 – BOX SCORE
Sonoma State was able to get on the board first again in the first inning in game two and
Austin Wiggins (2-1) earned his second win, coming in on relief of
Glenn Wallace who threw for five innings and surrendered one runs on six hits, while striking out three. Wiggins pitched the final two innings of the seven-inning game, allowing no hits while fanning three batters.
After
Jackson Stogner reached on an error to lead off the first inning, Harkin and Stogner each singled to load the bases for Zenn who hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Stogner. The Gators tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning when Justin Lamb knocked in Flores after Flores doubled to lead off the inning.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning when Harkin reached on an error, Schwartz singled, and Zenn walked to load the bases with one out. Kimura then pinch-hit for
Gary Detwiler and slapped the game-winning hit into right field on the first pitch of the at-bat to score Harkin from third, to take the 2-1 victory.
Eight different Seawolves' tallied at least one hit, while Zenn and Kimura recorded the two RBIs. San Francisco State collected six hits, two each from Grady Espinosa, Flores, and Lamb.
Sonoma State and San Francisco State will head south on Highway 101 to wrap up the four-game series at Maloney Field in San Francisco. First pitch is set for 11:00 am.
