ROHNERT PARK -- Senior ace
Samantha Lipperd tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener and came back to earn her second victory of the day, allowing two runs on five hits in the nightcap, helping the 15th-ranked Sonoma State softball team to a doubleheader sweep of 21st-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills with winning scores of 1-0 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field.
Winning three out of four games this weekend, the Seawolves (21-8 overall) maintain their position at second place in the CCAA standings at 14-6, two games behind first-place Humboldt State and one game ahead of both Chico State and UC San Diego. The Toros, who opened the 2013 season with an 11-2 record, fall to 18-12 overall and 10-10 in conference play.
Saturday's doubleheader wrapped up a 14-game homestand for Sonoma State. The Seawolves will now hit the road for 18 of their final 22 regular season games, beginning with a four-game series at Cal State Stanislaus next Friday and Saturday in Turlock. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
GAME 1
It would be a pitcher's duel throughout, pitting Lipperd and Toro starter Lauren Harper against each other. The two combined to allow just seven hits and one run. The one run would come across the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning on a batted ball that landed in fair territory between home plate and the pitcher's circle. The three Toros that surrounded the ball hit off of
Keisi Chinen's bat thought it would spin foul, but it would stay fair and
Ally Bryant, who pinch ran for
Ali Palermo earlier in the inning, scored the go-ahead run from third base on the play.
However, before that, the Seawolves had a chance to take a lead earlier in the game when they would load the bases in the third inning, but Harper would get out of the inning unscathed, forcing Palermo to pop out to Veronica Vazquez at shortstop, ending the inning.
In the sixth, Palermo drew a one-out walk before Bryant took over at first.
Holli Brown walked, then when
Hayley Condon popped out foul to the CSUDH catcher, Bryant tagged up and moved to third on a heads-up play. That's when Chinen's hit was able to plate Bryant for the 1-0 lead.
In the seventh, Lipperd got two quick outs before Daisy Beltran extended the game with a single through the right side, but the senior right-hander induced the game-ending pop up off the bat of Adriana Sanchez to secure her 12th win of the season.
Lipperd allowed three hits and three walks, striking out four in her complete game effort. Four different Seawolves had a hit in the game --
Ancia Purdy,
Vanessa Currie, Condon and Chinen.
For the Toros, Harper (7-8) was tagged with the tough-luck loss, scattering four hits, walking three and striking out three. Stephanie Hua, Vazquez and Beltran each had a hit for CSUDH.
GAME 2
The Seawolves came out swinging in the series finale, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a double by
Danielle D'Eccliss, a single by Currie and a two-RBI triple down the right field line by Palermo to score D'Eccliss and Currie for the 2-0 lead. Palermo came home on an RBI single by Brown to put SSU up 3-0.
The Toros began to make their move in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs and threating for more. Lipperd, who started game two for SSU, hit Vazquez with the bases loaded to bring in a run, then a single up the middle by Kaci McGinnis brought home the second run to come within a run at 3-2. The bases remained loaded for CSUDH with just one out, but Lipperd worked herself out of the jam, striking out Beltran and forcing Sanchez to flyout to
Megan Konieczka in center.
After a quick 1-2-3 inning for Toro starter Stephanie Jimenez and the defense in the bottom of the fourth, they returned to offense and Lipperd walked Jessica Hall to lead off the inning. However, Lipperd got Christina Chavez to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and it would take the air out of the Toro tires as they couldn't get anything going after that.
Lipperd (13-3) gave up five hits in the nightcap while striking out three. Currie and Palermo both went 2 for 3 with a run scored; Palermo also added two RBI on her second-career triple that came in the bottom of the first. D'Eccliss, Brown and Condon also recorded a hit in the victory.
Jimenez (11-4) suffered her fourth loss of the season, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out six. Chavez went 2 for 3 with a run scored to pace the Toros.
