BOX SCORE CAL POLY POMONA 10, #20 SONOMA STATE 5 – BOX SCORE

POMONA, Calif. – Sonoma State and Cal Poly Pomona put on a hitting show, combining for a total of 31 hits and 15 runs in game two of the four-game series on Friday afternoon.  However, the Seawolves found themselves on the low end of the final score in a 10-5 loss to the Broncos at Scolinos Field.  Sonoma State falls to 19-9, 11-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, while Pomona improves to 18-13, 11-11 CCAA.

Back-to-back doubles by Scott Harkin and Devon Zenn would get the Seawolves a one-run lead in the first inning, and Garrett Schwartz would tally one of his two RBIs in the third inning to give SSU a 2-1 lead early on.

After the Broncos were able to tie the game at two runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bronco offense came alive, recording four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double down the left field line by Jordan Whitman.  The four-run inning gave the hosts a 6-2 lead after five innings.  In fact, the Broncos outscored the Seawolves 8-3 from the fifth inning on.

Cal Poly Pomona extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, plating two more runs.  After Jason Padlo drove in a run on a single, scoring Donald Walter and moving Chris Carlson to second base, Carlson was granted third on a balk, and then came into score on a wild pitch by relief pitched Matt Manfre.

Sonoma State got one run back in the top of the eighth, but was nullified by two more Bronco runs in the bottom of the inning, giving CPP a 10-4 lead.  In the top of the ninth inning, the Seawolves last chance to pull off a comeback, Schwartz tried to get the offense going by drilling a solo homerun over the left field wall.  However, the solo shot would not be enough as Sonoma State suffered the 10-5 loss.

Sonoma State starting pitcher George Asmus (5-1) was dealt his first loss of the season after giving up six runs on ten hits in five innings of work.  Four different players tallied at least two hits for SSU, including Schwartz and Steven Filippi who both went 3-for-5.  Schwartz also knocked in two RBIs to lead the team while Jackson Stogner, Zenn, and Filippi also contributed one RBI in the loss.

Five separate players slapped two or more hits for the Broncos at the plate including three players with three hits.  Whitman led the offense with four RBIs and a run scored, going 3-for-5 at the plate.  Kevin Bosson (7-3) got the start for CCP and earned his conference leading seventh win of the season after pitching eight and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on 15 hits.

Sonoma State and Cal Poly Pomona will wrap the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am at Scolinos Field.
