GAME 2: #22 Sonoma State 5, UC San Diego 2 – Box Score
ROHNERT PARK – The Sonoma State baseball team relied on clutch offense en route to the Saturday doubleheader sweep of the Tritons of UC San Diego at Seawolf Diamond on the campus of Sonoma State. With the sweep of the twinbill, the Seawolves have guaranteed themselves a series win over the Tritons – a team that beat them six out of seven times just a season ago. Sonoma State improves to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA while UCSD drops to an even 11-11 (6-9 CCAA).
GAME 1: #22 Sonoma State 5, UC San Diego 4 (10 innings) – Box Score
Game one could be considered the
Scott Harkin (1-0) show, as the senior shortstop was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a two-run home run, in addition to earning his first win in relief on the mound. However, it was
Nathan Bernstein who came through in the bottom of the tenth inning to drive in the winning run, to take the 5-4 victory.
Sonoma State got two runs on the board in the second inning, due two Harkin's two-run big fly to left field that seemingly bounced off the glove of left fielder Scott Liske, and went over the fence. The Tritons retaliated in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring one run in each inning to tie the ball game at 2-2.
In the seventh inning,
Sam Montgomery was able to drive in two runs on a single through the right side of the infield, scoring
Steven Filippi and Harkin to take a 4-2 lead. UC San Diego would not go quietly, tying things up again in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Justin Rahn, and a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Tuck that scored Richard Seigel from third base, knotting the score at 4-4.
Neither team would score in the ninth, although Sonoma State did have a runner in scoring position with no outs. The Seawolves would not be able to drive in the run as a fly out, a fielder's choice and a strikeout would quiet the SSU threat. In the bottom of the tenth inning, however,
Jeffrey Boulware got on base by singling to left field and was eventually knocked in by Bernstein for the 5-4 walk-off win.
SSU starter
George Asmus pitched well into the seventh inning, giving up two runs on four hits, while fanning eight batters.
Taylor Herbert, Steven Zaharias, and Harkin all came in on relief of Asmus, with Harkin recording the win.
On top of Harkin's impressive 4-for-4 day at the plate, Bernstein contributed two hits, one run, and an RBI, while Montgomery, Filippi, and Boulware all notched one hit in the win.
Getting the start for UC San Diego was Rahn, who pitched for four and two-thirds innings, before being relieved by a slew of pitchers. The Tritons used six pitchers after Rahn, with Troy Cruz (the starting second baseman) faced with the loss, dropping him to a 0-1 record.
UC San Diego scattered seven hits around seven different players, while three different players recorded one RBI each.
GAME 2: #22 Sonoma State 5, UC San Diego 2 – Box Score
Sonoma State starting pitcher
Glenn Wallace (3-0) was impressive again, earning his third win of the season by throwing for six innings and striking out eight batters, while giving up two runs on four hits, ending his consecutive innings without allowing an earned run streak at 24 innings pitched.
Jayson Richards earned his first save of the season by striking out the side in the seventh to seal the 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Seawolves struck first, plating a run in the second inning, however, UC San Diego would take a 2-1 lead after a two-run shot by Nick La Face sailed over the left-center field wall. The home team would tie the game at two runs apiece in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Jackson Stogner advanced home due to a throwing error by the UCSD shortstop.
Sonoma State would open things up in the sixth inning when they plated three runs to take a 5-2 lead, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Montgomery, sending home Stogner and
Garrett Schwartz. The Seawolves earned their third run of the inning on a wild pitch that allowed
Gary Detwiler to score from third base. After allowing back-to-back singles to start the top of the seventh inning, Richards settled down and proceeded to strikeout the side, assuring the 5-2 win for the Seawolves.
Offensively for SSU, designated hitter
Marcus Kimura slapped two hits, while Montgomery, Schwartz,
Devon Zenn, and
Steven Moen each tallied one hit. For UCSD, La Face went 3-for-3 at the dish, recording two RBI's and a run scored. Triton starter Dan Kolodin (1-2) took the loss after pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs and striking out four.
Sonoma State will look to complete the four-game series sweep of the Tritons on Sunday, as the teams will play a single game with the first pitch set for 11:00 a.m.
