GAME 2: #25 Sonoma State 8, Cal State San Bernardino 0 (5 innings) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- Danielle D'Eccliss and Holly Brown both with 4 for 5 with a triple, including five combined RBI, and
Ancia Purdy added four more hits as the Sonoma State softball team scattered 24 hits to complete the four-game series sweep over Cal State San Bernardino with 6-1 and 8-0 wins on Saturday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field. With the victories, the 25th-ranked Seawolves move into a tie for second place in the CCAA standings at 11-5 (18-7 overall), extending their win streak to six games. The Coyotes have lost seven straight, falling to the bottom of the conference standings at 5-11 (8-18 overall).
In the four-game series over Cal State San Bernardino, Sonoma State hit .451 as a team, amassing for 46 base hits, only eight of them being of the extra base hit variety. It produced 30 runs in four games for the home squad. Brown had a career-high weekend, going 7 for 10 at the plate with two triples, six RBI and four runs scored, compiling a 1.100 slugging percentage. Purdy also pounded out seven hits (in 14 at bats) and brought home three runs.
Sonoma State will take next week off before hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills on Mar. 22-23 in Rohnert Park. The Toros, who came into the weekend as the No. 5 team in the nation, lost three out of four on the road at San Francisco State this weekend. Following the four-game series with CSUDH, Sonoma State will then play 18 of its final 22 regular season games on the road, beginning with a road trip to Turlock on back-to-back weekends, first to face Cal State Stanislaus (Mar. 29-30), then for the annual Tournament of Champions, presented by Mizuno (Apr. 4-7).
GAME 1
Samantha Lipperd cruised to her conference-leading 10th win of season, improving to 10-3, and was just one out away from earning the shutout victory, but an RBI single by Jacqueline Lopez on a 2-2 count brought home the one and only run for Cal State San Bernardino. Prior to the seventh inning, Lipperd had given up just one hit -- an infield single by Britney Butler in the top of the first inning.
In all, Lipperd gave up just four hits (three of which came in the seventh) and the one run, not allowing a walk and going over the century mark for strikeouts on the season with nine on Saturday -- she now has 103 strikeouts this season and 965 for her career.
Meanwhile, the Seawolves had a day at the plate. D'Eccliss went a perfect 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored and Purdy went 3 for 4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Keisi Chinen went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored while
Vanessa Currie,
Hayley Condon, Brown and
Jayme Tickemyer also had a base hit, totalling 12 for Sonoma State in the opener.
Chinen gave SSU the early 1-0 lead in the second when she singled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Brown and scored on a wild pitch by CSUSB starter Kaitlyn Randall. In the third, the Seawolves plated four runs on five hits, including a couple of RBI triples by D'Eccliss and Brown. Currie also brought home a run on a suicide squeeze bunt for the 5-0 advantage.
Another run came across the plate in the fourth when Purdy tripled with one out, then scored on another wild pitch, this time by reliever Monica Cartright, who replaced Randall in the third. That's all the Seawolves would get, however, as they would win 6-1 -- the one run by the Coyotes coming on the aforementioned RBI single by Lopez in the seventh.
Randall took the loss, the first of two on the day, allowing eight hits and five runs in two and two-thirds innings. Cartwright and Abreanna Landeros also saw time in the circle for Cal State San Bernardino. Butler led the offense with a 2 for 3 effort at the plate.
GAME 2
Sonoma State would score at least one run in every offensive inning in the nightcap, starting with an RBI single by Currie in the bottom of the first. Three runs came across in the second on an RBI single by
Megan Konieczka, an RBI sacrifice fly by D'Eccliss and an RBI triple by Currie to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
In the SSU third, Chinen brought home Condon on a groundout after Condon doubled to lead off the inning for the 5-0 lead. Three more runs came home in the fourth on RBI's from
Ali Palermo, Condon and Brown to put the Seawolves up 8-0 through four.
Amanda Llerena (8-4) worked five scoreless innings and allowed six hits and no walks, while striking out three. The Coyotes threatened with runners on second and third in the third inning, but induced an inning-ending fly out to D'Eccliss in right field to end the frame. It would be the only true threat by CSUSB in the game against Llerena, who is now tied for the second-most wins by a pitcher in the CCAA this season.
Brown wrapped up an outstanding weekend, going 3 for 3 at the plate in game two with an RBI and a run scored and both Currie and Condon went 2 for 3. The Seawolves pounded out 12 more hits in the nightcap, also getting a hit from Purdy, D'Eccliss, Palermo,
Olivia Lucchese and Konieczka.
Randall was tagged with her third loss of the series, falling to 5-13 this season as the pitcher of record for Cal State San Bernardino. She gave up 11 hits and all eight runs (seven earned). Landeros worked just one-third of an inning. Darian Manuz and Alyssa Flores had two hits apiece to lead the Coyotes in the ballgame.
