GAME 2: Chico State 2, #16 Sonoma State 1 (8 innings) -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- The 16th-ranked Sonoma State softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep by visiting Chico State on Friday after being shutout 7-0 in the opener and falling in a narrow 2-1 loss in eight innings in the nightcap. The Seawolves have lost six of their last seven, dropping to 32-14 overall, but they remain in third place in the CCAA standings with a 19-11 conference mark. The Wildcats come to within one game of SSU in the CCAA at 18-12 (21-21 overall).
Ancia Purdy led the offense, going 3 for 7 to go along with three stolen bases, in addition to scoring Sonoma State's only run in the twinbill -- it came in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two when Purdy scored on an RBI single by
Danielle D'Eccliss to tie the game at 1-1 at the time.
Amanda Llerena allowed just three Chico State hits in the second game and both runs the Wildcats scored were unearned runs. She struckout six, but also had seven walks, falling to 13-7 on the year.
Samantha Lipperd (19-7) also suffered a loss in the circle, giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits and six walks; she struck out seven.
The series will wrap up on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at Noon. It will also be Senior Day as four SSU seniors --
Vanessa Currie,
Danielle D'Eccliss,
Samantha Lipperd and
Ali Palermo -- will be honored in a special pre-game ceremony, starting at approximately 11:40 a.m.
In the opener, Chico State broke out for six runs in the top of the fourth inning after Lipperd gave up five walks and two hits. Another Wildcat run came around to score in the fifth on a Marlee Rettig double to put the visitors up 7-0.
The Seawolves managed just three hits in the opener off of Kayla McConnell (6-10).
In the nightcap, SSU recorded eight hits, but would leave 10 runners left on base in the contest -- two were left on base in four of the eight innings. Purdy went 2 for 4 and D'Eccliss had the game-tying RBi in the seventh.
Chico State took a 1-0 lead when Taylor Hanamaikai advanced to third on a single by Kelli Keefe, but Hanamaikai was able to score when the single bounced off D'Eccliss' glove in right field.
Sonoma State knotted the game in the bottom of the seventh when Purdy reached on an error, stole second base, then scored on D'Eccliss single. The Seawolves would also put runners on the corners, but Alex Molina (12-6) induced an inning-ending pop out.
The Wildcats then took the lead (and for good) in the top of the eighth. Emily McEnaney doubled to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a groundout, then came around to score on a wild pitch, which held up to be the winning run.
