CHICO, Calif. – Playing some of their best baseball of the season, the Sonoma State baseball team achieved a doubleheader sweep of archrival Chico State on Saturday, guaranteeing a series win over the Wildcats.  The Seawolves battled in game one, but were able to pull out a narrow 2-1 win behind strong pitching from Sidhu and company.  The nightcap was not as close as the first two games as the Seawolves went on to win 6-2 to take the first three games on the series.  Sonoma State improves to 30-15, 22-13 CCAA after winning six in a row and nine of their last ten.  Chico State drops to 32-11, 25-10 CCAA.

GAME ONE: SONOMA STATE 2, #6 CHICO STATE 1 – BOX SCORE
Jackson Stogner led off the game with a walk and eventually was driven in on an RBI single by Garrett Schwartz to give Sonoma State a 1-0 lead in the first inning.  Sidhu was able to hold off the Chico State offense, carrying a no-hitter through four innings, while striking out four batters in a row at one point.

In the sixth inning, Scott Harkin was awarded first base after being hit by the pitch to lead off the inning.  Harkin moved to second base after Steven Filippi drew a walk and proceeded to steal third.  A throwing error on the Chico State catcher on the throw down to third allowed Harkin to come in to score the Seawolves second run of the game, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Bad news struck the Seawolves in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Sidhu was forced to leave the game due to an apparent hand injury.  Reliever Austin Wiggins took over for Sidhu in the sixth, and picked up where Sidhu left off, not allowing a hit in the inning, keeping the 2-0 lead safe.

Chico State threatened in the bottom of seventh after the Wildcats loaded the bases off Wiggins, all by way of the walk.  With two outs and bases loaded, Ian Ocon replaced Wiggins on the mound and was able to induce Ben Manlove to ground out to third base to end the inning and the threat.  However, Chico State second baseman Cody Webber got the Wildcats on the board in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly, off of the fourth pitcher of the game Jayson Richards, narrowing the SSU lead to one, at 2-1.  Glenn Wallace, SSU's sixth pitcher of the game, came in to close things out, earning his first save of the season, after Steven Zaharias issued a ninth inning lead off walk to Austin Prott.

Offensively for the Seawolves, Stogner and Schwartz each had two hits with Schwartz contributing an RBI.  The Sonoma State pitching staff held the Wildcats to one hit and one run, but issued eight walks, seven of which came from the five relief pitchers.  After leaving without throwing a pitch in the sixth inning, Sidhu was still able to earn his eighth win of the season, thanks to solid relief pitching out of the bullpen.

For Chico State, Ryne Clark was the lone Wildcat to tally a hit, while Webber hit a sacrifice fly to record an RBI in the 2-1 loss.  Starter Troy Neiman drops to 7-3 on the season after pitching for six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

GAME TWO: SONOMA STATE 6, #6 CHICO STATE 2 – BOX SCORE
The Wildcats cashed in on a fielding error by Sonoma State, as Ryne Clark slapped just their second hit of the Saturday doubleheader to score the first run of the game, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  In the top of the third inning, with one out, Scott Harkin was able to tie the game at 1-1 for SSU on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jeffery Boulware.  The Seawolves were able to take a 2-1 lead with two outs in the third, when Devon Zenn hit an RBI single up the middle to score Stogner from third.  Later in the inning, on a double steal by Steven Filippi and Zenn, Chico State catcher Ben Manlove threw the ball into the runner, Filippi, and had it kicked away from the third baseman into left field, allowing Filippi to score and Zenn to advance to third to take a 3-1 lead.

Sonoma State tacked on more in the top of the fourth inning, this time on a Jeffrey Boulware single that scored Sam Montgomery who led off the inning with an infield single.  The Seawolves scored for the third inning in a row in the fifth inning, as Montgomery doubled in Filippi to give SSU a 5-1 lead.  Chico State was able to get one back in the bottom of the inning, via the sacrifice fly off the bat of Eric Angerer, bringing the hosts to within three runs at 5-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, already leading 5-2, Montgomery hit a deep solo shot, to give the Seawolves a 6-2 lead, and eventual final score.

Montgomery led the SSU offense going 3-for-4 at the plate, with a big fly, two RBIs and one run.  Stogner chipped in with two hits and run scored, while Harkin, Zenn, and Boulware all contributed one RBI in the win.  Starting pitcher Glenn Wallace continued to pitch well, throwing his fourth complete game of the season, improving his record to 7-1.

For Chico State, starter Mike Botelho lasted for four inning, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits, dropping Botelho to a 4-4 record.  Offensively, Austin Prott led the way for the Wildcats, hitting 2-for-4 at the plate while Angerer and Clark contributed one RBI each in the loss.

Sonoma State and Chico State will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow, Sunday, April 28, when both teams travel to Raley Field, home of the Sacramento River Cats.  First pitch of the series finale is set for 5:30 pm.  To purchase tickets for the second annual Capital City Clash and for more information, visit sonomaseawolves.com
