BOX SCORE #28 Cal State L.A. 15, #23 Sonoma State 3 -- Box Score
STOCKTON, Calif. -- Cal State L.A. jumped on Sonoma State for 12 runs in the first four innings on their way to a 15-3 win over the Seawolves on Saturday evening at the CCAA Baseball Championship at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton. Their victory sets up a seventh and final game in the tournament, scheduled for noon on Sunday with the conference's automatic qualifer on the line. The Seawolves pounded out a season-high 16 hits, but if they want to claim their sixth CCAA championship since 1999, they'll have to wait until tomorrow to do it.
Though they were facing elimination, the Golden Eagles came into the game with a head of steam after a 14-3 drubbing of Cal State Monterey Bay. They kept the momentum going with two runs in the first and then four in the second.
Trailing 6-1, the Seawolves cut into the Golden Eagle lead in the third when
Devon Zenn started a rally with a two-out double. He scored on a
Garrett Schwartz single up the middle. The next batter,
Sam Montgomery, singled to left and when the left fielder misplayed the ball, Schwartz was able to scamper home and trim the lead to 6-3.
That's as close as it would get, however, as the Golden Eagles jumped on
Taylor Herbert for six runs and six hits in the fourth inning, knocking the Seawolves' starter out of the game.
The Golden Eagles would pound out 17 hits in the game, just one more than Sonoma. However, the Seawolves had trouble in the field, committing five errors that resulted in four unearned runs.
Kyle Kearney came into the game late and singled twice. Along with
Marcus Kimura, Schwartz, and Montgomery, he was one of four Seawolves with multiple hits.
Jon Richards pitched the final 5 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Perhaps most importantly, his effort helped preserve the bullpen for Sunday's championship game.
First pitch is set for 12:00 pm tomorrow. The game will be broadcast (video and audio) on The Seawolf Sports Network. Go to
