BOX SCORE #28 Cal State L.A. 7, #23 Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score
STOCKTON, Calif. -- A potent Cal State L.A. offense got rolling on Sunday with a five-run fifth inning as the Golden Eagles downed Sonoma State 7-1 in the title game of the 2013 CCAA Baseball Championship at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton. The Seawolves did a nice job keeping the Golden Eagles at bay for four innings, but four hits and an error opened the door for a big number in the fifth. The win allows the Golden Eagles to claim the CCAA's automatic berth into the NCAA West Regional. Sonoma State, the No. 2 team in last week's regional poll, will likely claim another of the six spots up for grabs when the selections are announced later on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles forced Sunday's game with a 15-3 win on Saturday night. Turning to senior
Austin Wiggins on Sunday, however, it looked like the Seawolves found a way to silence a CSULA offense that seems to be peaking at exactly the right time.
Cal State L.A. threatened in the third with the bases loaded, but
Ian Ocon entered the game and induced a harmless popup from Cody Doyle to end the inning.
Following a quiet fourth inning, it looked like the fifth might go smoothly as well as Ocon got Scott Masik to ground out for out number one. An error would follow, but after he got Wharton to fly out, it looked like the Seawolves might make it out safely. As it turned out, the error proved to loom large.
Jeremy Weber, who reached on the error, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on another to make it 1-0. Tyler Christian then struck out, but reached on yet another wild pitch, setting the stage for a three-run Ryan Cooperstone home run that made it 4-0. It was the second home run of the year for Cooperstone, both of them coming in the CCAA Tournament against Sonoma with two runners on.
Cal State L.A. tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh to make it 7-0. Sonoma State rallied for a run in the ninth after back-to-back doubles by
Devon Zenn and
Garrett Schwartz, but it was too little, too late.
The Golden Eagles got four shutout innings from James Wharton, the league's offensive player of the year and then five from Ryan Cooperstone, a second baseman who was named the MVP of the tournament.
Ian Ocon was tagged with the loss, though just one of the five runs he gave up was earned.
George Asmus pitched 2.1 innings and
Jayson Richards fired a scoreless eighth.
The conference later announced that
Harmen Sidhu,
Glenn Wallace and
Marcus Kimura was named to the 2013 CCAA All-Tournament Team.
The Seawolves will find out their NCAA fate later on Sunday night. The 2013 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Tournament field will be announced via a live selection show on NCAA.com, starting at 7:00 pm.
