BOX SCORE Cal State Dominguez Hills 9, #16 Sonoma State 1 -- Box Score
CARSON, Calif. -- Cal State Dominguez Hills scored nine unanswered runs against Sonoma State to take the opening game of the final regular season series of the year, 9-1 on Friday afternoon at Toro Diamond. The Seawolves see their season-best seven game winning streak come to an end as they fall to 31-16, 23-14 CCAA. They will also have to wait at least one more day to clinch a post-season berth as Cal State East Bay downed Cal Poly Pomona to get within two games of the Seawolves for the final spot with three games to go.
Sonoma State was ranked second in this week's NCAA West Region poll. The west's top-ranked team, Cal State Monterey Bay, was a 4-3 winner on Friday. The third and fourth-ranked teams, Grand Canyon and Dixie State, are playing a doubleheader on Friday in Phoenix.
Taylor Herbert started out strong on Friday, allowing just two hits through the first five innings. The Seawolves gave him a lead in the second when
Steven Moen singled, then eventually came home to score on a balk.
In the sixth inning, the Toros finally got to Herbert. After a hit batsman, a sacrifice, and a single, Taylor Kahanowitch singled through the left side to tie the game. Herbert got the next batter, but a single and a double with two outs resulted in three more runs, giving the Toros a 4-1 lead.
CSUDH would tack on another run in the seventh, then four more in the eighth to put the game firmly out of reach.
Sean Wardour did a nice job, holding the Seawolves to just a single run over seven innings of work. He improved to 8-4 on the season.
Herbert (3-3) was tagged with the loss after yielding four runs, all earned, in 5 2/3 innings.
Austin Wiggins threw the final two and a third.
Jackson Stogner had two hits and walked three times, reaching base all five times he came to the plate.
The Seawolves' usually solid defense committed four errors.
The Seawolves and Toros will get together for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. Any combination of two Seawolf wins or Cal State East Bay losses will result in a CCAA Championship Tournament berth for Sonoma.
