BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, Cal Baptist 0 -- Box Score
ROHNERT PARK -- With just 1:43 left in the first half,
Margi Osmundson broke away from a defender and sprinted upfield to a pass from
Lauren Curtin before challenging the opposing goalkeeper one-on-one. Two dribbles later, Osmundson fired a shot past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, as it would be all Sonoma State would need in a 1-0 victory over visiting Cal Baptist in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
The Seawolves will enter CCAA play on Friday at San Francisco State with a 2-0-0 record. The Lancers, who finished 18-2-1 last season, falls to 0-3-0 after several narrow losses to CCAA teams (Chico State, Cal State Stanislaus and SSU) to open the season.
Sonoma State got off to a quick start in the match, attempting six shots in the first 16 minutes before Cal Baptist even had a chance. The half would end at an 11-5 shot advantage for SSU, and it would be the 11th Seawolf shot that found the net. Curtin took control of the ball at midfield and served it up ahead to Osmundson, who broke free and streaked towards CBU netminder Leigh Ann Lindsay with no one in between. Osmundson got to it first and was able to take a couple of steps before rocketing a shot past Lindsey for the 1-0 lead.
Cal Baptist wouldn't back down, however, as the Lancers held a slight 6-5 advantage in shots in the second half, but none would ever get past Seawolf goalkeeper
Allison Hadidian. Hadidian, a true freshman, made five saves on the day and has held her opponents scoreless in her first 135 minutes of her young career.
Alicia Mertz, who recorded a hat trick in the season opener on Friday, led Sonoma State's attack with six of the 16 total shots on Tuesday, while Curtin and Osmundson took three attempts each.
The start of the CCAA schedule begins on Friday when Sonoma State travels to San Francisco to take on Bay Area-rival San Francisco State. Kickoff from Cox Stadium is set for 3:00 pm.
