BOX SCORE #16 Sonoma State 1, Cal Poly Pomona 1 (F/2OT) -- Box Score
POMONA, Calif. -- Cara Curtin broke a scoreless tie in the 35th minute with her team-leading sixth goal of the season, but 16th-ranked Sonoma State surrendered a goal in the second half and neither SSU or host Cal Poly Pomona could find the net again as the game ended in a 1-1 tie on Friday night at Kellogg Field in Pomona.
The Seawolves remain unbeaten on the year at 5-0-2 (3-0-2 CCAA) while the Broncos go to 4-2-1 and 2-2-1 in conference play.
The Seawolves held a slight advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes (7-5), but what would matter is the 1-0 score on the board at halftime in favor of SSU. Thanks to a long pass up the right side of the field from
Margi Osmundson to Curtin, who fired a shot past CPP netminder Alex Abbott from 12 yards out for the one-goal lead at 34:42.
In the second half, the shot count favored the host Broncos (6-5), which helped CPP knot the match up at 1-1 when Samantha Stiles took a free kick that was initially saved by SSU goalkeeper
Allison Hadidian, but the rebound went out to Allie Maxwell, who flicked the ball up and over a scrum of players to Melissa Garcia at the mouth of the goal which sent the ball home at 67:11.
Both teams went shot for shot the rest of the way, but neither could find the game-winner, despite 20 extra minutes of play at the end of regulation.
Hadidian made four saves on the night and still remains unbeaten in her young career. Her counterpart, CPP's Abbott, made five stops.
Sonoma State will turn its sights to UC San Diego, which came up just short in last year's NCAA Division II national championship match. The Seawolves and Tritons will kickoff at 2:00 pm on Sunday in La Jolla. Sonoma then returns home for a four-match homestand, beginning with a Friday contest with Cal State L.A. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
