BOX SCORE #22 UC San Diego 1, Sonoma State 0 -- Box Score
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Host UC San Diego scored off of a free kick in the 31st minute to break a scoreless tie and visiting Sonoma State couldn't overcome the deficit, as the Seawolves suffered a narrow 1-0 loss on Sunday at the hands of the 22nd-ranked Tritons at Triton Stadium in La Jolla. With the defeat, the Seawolves' record in CCAA action falls even at 3-3-0 (4-3-1 overall) while the Tritons improve to 6-1-1 and 4-1-1 in the conference.
"That was a tough loss," SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "We were in control of the game and then they had a free kick that Beau (Diaz) had covered, but it deflected off the wall into the upper corner."
The lone goal of the match came at 30:45 by Andisheh Bagheri when he bounced it off the wall of SSU defenders and redirected it into the net for the 1-0 lead and eventual game-winner. The Seawolves were held to just two shots in the first half and ended up being outshot 18-8 on the day. However, a
Taylor Varnadore shot at 76:51 looked as if it would tie things up, but it banged off the post and bounced out, then cleared by UCSD defenders.
"We battled back and created a lot of chances and thought we had (the match) equalized, but Varnadore's shot hit the post and rebounded out," added Ziemer. "Sometimes it's a game of inches."
Seawolf goalkeeper
Beau Diaz made three big saves to keep Sonoma State within striking distance, including a one-on-one save late in regulation, but the free kick that didn't bounce SSU's way held up as the difference.
Ziemer finished by saying, "After the game the team was disappointed, but we know there is a lot of season left and we will bounce back."
Sonoma State returns home on Friday to begin a four-match homestand; the Seawolves will host Cal State L.A. on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at the Seawolf Soccer Field.
