Men's Soccer Has To Settle For 1-1 Tie With Yellowjackets

This Taylor Varnadore free kick put the Seawolves up 1-0 in the first half.
BOX SCORE Sonoma State 1, Montana State Billings 1  --  Box Score

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.
--  After Taylor Varnadore's first half goal put Sonoma State up 1-0 late in the first half, it looked like the Seawolves might be closing in on a perfect weekend.  Disaster struck in the 85th minute, however, as Montana State Billings muscled in a late goal to tie the score and force overtime, which also ended deadlocked.  The 1-1 draw gave Sonoma (1-0-1) four points on the weekend, resulting in team champion honors at the 2013 Seawolf Classic.  The Yellowjackets ended their weekend at 0-1-1.

The Seawolves controlled play for much of the first half, displaying good ball movement and pressuring the Yellowjacket back line.  Their lone goal, though, came off a free kick from just outside the box as Varnadore caught the 'Jackets by surprise, threading the ball between a defender and the goalkeeper and into the net.

Sonoma State had several decent chances to score another goal, but they were turned away and left clinging to a one-goal advantage.  For most of the game, a 1-0 lead looked like it would be enough until an apparent defensive miscommunication in the box allowed Kyle Emerick to poke the ball past a charging Beau Diaz to tie it up.

The Seawolves had a great opportunity to win the game in the first overtime when a Varnadore header bounced off the right post.  A few minutes later, in the second overtime, it looked like Varnadore had done it again as he torched the back of the net on a breakaway.  Unfortunately, he was called offside, negating the goal and preserving the tie.

Sonoma outshot Montana State Billings 18-8 overall and 13-4 after halftime.  They had a 12-2 edge in corner kicks.

Diaz made three saves for the Seawolves while his counterpart, Eoin Hurley had seven.

The Seawolves will open up CCAA play next weekend when they travel to San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
