HAYWARD, Calif. -- Held to just 14 points in the first half, the Sonoma State women's basketball team couldn't overcome a cold shooting performance and a season-high 28 turnovers, losing 71-39 to Cal State East Bay on Friday evening at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward. With seven straight losses, the Seawolves fall to 2-13 overall and 1-10 in CCAA play. The Pioneers, meanwhile, improve to 11-7 (8-3 CCAA).
Cal State East Bay's stifling defense proved to be a dominant force, holding Sonoma State to a 3 for 17 shooting performance in the opening half. In fact, the Seawolves scored just as many points from the free throw line (seven) as they did from the field (a pair of field goals and a three-pointer).
Trailing by 19 points at 29-10 with 1:46 left in the first period, SSU scored the final four points of the half, thanks to a three-ball by
Brittany Martin and a made free throw by
Bronte Sheahan. However, CSUEB opened the second half on a 12-2 run to lead by as much as 25 points before running away with the eventual 32-point victory.
Sheahan led Sonoma State with 10 points in 33 minutes of action as
Kristina Fahey chipped in with nine points, six of which came in the first half. The Seawolves hit 28.6 percent of their shots (12-42), including 25.0 percent from three-point range (5-20).
Four players scored in double-figures for Cal State East Bay, led by the 14 point effort of Sarah Finlay off the bench. Danielle Peacon (13), Micah Walker (11) and Tori Breshers (10) chipped in with 10 or more points while Rachel Finnegan brought down a game-high 10 rebounds.
Sonoma State goes from the East Bay to the Monterey Bay to take on Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Saturday night at 5:30 pm.
