CARSON, Calif. – The Sonoma State women's basketball game stayed close with host Cal State Dominguez Hills in its first game of the 2014 calendar year, but the Toros, fueled by the game-high 34 points from Monay Lee, defeated the Seawolves, 72-62, on Friday night at the Torodome in Carson. Sonoma falls to 2-7 on the year and 1-4 in the CCAA and Dominguez rises to 7-2 (3-2 CCAA).
While SSU outshot CSUDH by a considerable margin (46.2 percent-33.3 percent), the Seawolves were outrebounded 52-26, including 29-6 on the offensive glass. Both teams made 24 shots from the field, the Toros were 20 of 23 from the free throw line while the Seawolves were 7 of 9.
Sonoma's
Tanner Adams netted the first points of the game on a jumper just 21 seconds in, but Cal State Dominguez Hills responded with an 18-5 run over the next six minutes to take an 11-point lead at the 13:35 mark. It was fueled by the 10 points from Monay Lee during that span -- she went on to score 20 of her game-high 34 points before the break. Sonoma State slowly chipped away, getting to within five points (26-21) with 6:16 left in the first half on a three-pointer by
Kristina Fahey, but that would be as close as the Seawolves would get in the opening period as the Toros took a 37-28 advantage into the intermission.
Sonoma and Dominguez both made 12 shots from the field in the first 20 minutes of action and SSU led 4-3 in made three-pointers, but CSUDH made up for it at the free throw line – the Toros were 10-10 from the charity stripe, whereas the Seawolves didn't even attempt a free shot.
In the second half, Sonoma State made its move and eventually got to within two points on a couple of occasions, the last being at the 9:31 mark on a
Hannah Sourek layin to put SSU down 53-51. However, CSUDH initiated another large run as the hosts scored 13 unanswered points during a 15-2 runover a span of four minutes to grab their largest lead of the game at 68-53. The Toros remained in control the rest of the way, cruising to the 10-point win.
Fahey led SSU with 13 points on 5 of 7 from the floor and 3 of 3 from long range, followed by the 12 points from Sourek.
Sonoma State continues its four-game road trip when it returns to action Saturday night when the Seawolves visit Cal State L.A. Tip off from the Eagles Nest is set for 5:30 pm.
