DAVIS, Calif. -- A pair of free throws by
Leeana Bade put the Sonoma State women's basketball team up by five points with 4:21 left to play in the first half, but NCAA Division I UC Davis scored 12 of the next 15 points before halftime, then ran away in the second half to defeat the Seawolves 85-57 in exhibition action at The Pavilion in Davis. Sonoma was led by the 15 points from
Hannah Sourek as SSU will now look to open the regular season next Saturday at home against Menlo at 3:00 pm.
The Division II Seawolves gave the Division I Aggies a run for their money in the opening 20 minutes of action, leading for more than half of the period. After a pair of free throws by UC Davis just 17 seconds into the contest, the Seawolves went on a 9-1 run over the next two minutes to take a 9-3 lead early. The two squads then went back-and-forth, tying and changing leads nine different times, but the Seawolves would remain in control until the Aggies pulled off a 12-3 run in the final 3:25 of the first half, including three free throws by UCD's Sydnee Fipps with the clock at 0:00 to put the hosts up 36-32 at halftime.
A Sourek layup opened the second half and put Sonoma State down by two points, but UC Davis began to slowly pull away and eventually grabbed a 22-point lead at 70-48 with 5:53 to go in the game. SSU chipped away late and got with 17 with 2:16 left, but UCD scored the final 11 points of the night off of six Seawolf turnovers to clinch the exhibition win on Friday night.
Taylor Acosta scored nine points on the night before fouling out late,
Molly Donovan added eight points while Bade and
Tanner Adams had six apiece. The Seawolves connected on 38.1 percent of their shots (16 for 42), including a 7 for 17 (41.2 percent) effort in the final 20 minutes. Sonoma outrebounded UC Davis, 33-32, but the host Aggies scored 35 points off of 27 Seawolf turnovers.
UC Davis had four players score in double figures, led by the 17 points of Celia Marfone. The Aggies shot 46.8 percent for the game on 29 of 62 from the floor, including a red hot 58.6 percent clip (17 for 29) in the second half.
